NFL Preseason Week 2 Parlay Picks
August 14, 2024MLB Same Game Parlay Picks, Odds & Predictions – Friday, August 16
August 15, 2024After a rough start to last season, the Virginia Tech Hokies finished strong laying the foundation for an even better season in 2024. They won five of their last seven games, including a 41-20 spanking of a good Tulane squad in the Military Bowl, to win seven games overall, their most since the 2019 season. Oddsmakers at BetMGM have taken notice of the potential setting Tech’s win total at a lofty 8.5. There are good reasons. The Hokies return a strong veteran core and have a manageable schedule. But winning nine regular season games might be stretch for a program that hasn’t achieved that since 2017.
Regular Season Wins for the Virginia Tech Hokies
Over 8.5 ( +122 )
Under 8.5 ( -150 )
Brent Pry has the program trending up as he enters his third season. The club rebounded from a 3-8 campaign in 2022 to win seven games overall and post a winning record in ACC games for the first time since 2019. Beating rival Virginia, 55-17, and winning a bowl game for the first time in seven years were highlights. However, the Hokies stumbled against better opponents, especially within the conference, falling to Florida State, Louisville and NC State by a combined score of 108-48. To cash the OVER on their CFB futures bet they’ll need to have more success in those games.

Roster
Of their six regular season wins in 2023, five came against schools that finished the year with a losing record. Boston College was 7-6 and needed a bowl win over SMU to get there. And as highlighted above we know about their struggles with better opponents, so it’s premature to give the Hokies a spot in the ACC title game. There is, however, reason for optimism. The close to 2023 was solid and the emergence of Kyron Drones elevated the offense.
Grabbing the starting job in the third game, Drones added a dimension to the offense that flustered opposing defenses. As a result the Hokies averaged more than 33 points over their final nine games and scored their most points in season since 2019. Drones threw for over 2,000 yards with 17 touchdowns and only three interceptions in 285 attempts, but he completed just 58.2 percent of his throws. Drones also helped a ground game that finished among the top 25 nationally by scampering for 818 yards and five more scores.
And the Hokies should again be solid running the football with leading rusher Bhayshul Tuten back. He totaled 863 yards averaging five yards a carry and scored 10 TDs. Tuten was also a threat out of the backfield with 27 receptions and two more scores as a security blanket for his QB. The receivers are strong and the line returns four of five regulars from a season ago. If everything clicks the Hokies could be explosive on this side of the football.
The Hokies were strong defensively last season finishing second in the ACC and 20th nationally in total yards. Antwaun Powell-Ryland was a big reason why spending a lot of time in the backfield of opponents registering team-highs of 9.5 sacks and 14.5 TFLs. There were some issues against the run which were addressed by adding hulking linemen through the portal. Aeneas Peebles (Duke) and Kelvin Gilliam (Oklahoma) are expected to improve that area.
Schedule
A non-conference slate against three teams the Hokies played last year isn’t too scary. But they did lose to Rutgers and Marshall, so perhaps payback is an issue. The ACC opener at Miami in Week 5 comes ahead of a trip to northern California for a date with Stanford in what is the toughest part of the schedule. There is no matchup with ACC title game participants Florida State and Louisville and the Carolinas are not scheduled. After the Stanford game the Hokies have just one road trip until Thanksgiving and they get Clemson at home in Week 11. It’s a cushy schedule with the final two games at Duke and against UVA coming after a bye.
Prediction
The close to 2023 was nice and the return of several key players adds to the excitement. But the Hokies must win some games against stronger competition and avoid a gaffe like they had against Purdue and Marshall. The program is definitely trending upwards but the Hokies haven’t done anything of note other than hammer Tulane in last season’s Military Bowl and even that had a dark cloud. I don’t see this squad winning nine games so backing the UNDER on the CFB futures is the smart play.
