When the Chicago Blackhawks wear their red jerseys at United Center next season, Circa Sports will be the official jersey patch sponsor. In the history of the franchise, this is the first game jersey partner. The NHL’s “Original Six,” the Blackhawks, will be wearing patches on their iconic home red sweaters for the first time. Following the launch of mobile and retail betting in September of last year, Circa Sports is one of eight sports betting apps that are accessible in Illinois. About 40 miles north of Chicago, in Waukegan, Full House Resorts runs the American Place casino, and Circa is its sportsbook.
“Sports betting has continued to grow in popularity among our fans and offered new ways for them to engage with our game,” said Blackhawks President of Business Operations Jaime Faulkner. “We couldn’t be prouder to be adding Circa Sports to the Chicago Blackhawks roster of partners as they share in our goals to grow interest in our game and offer fans exciting and original experiences.”
Before the 2022–2023 season, the Las Vegas–based sportsbook and the Vegas Golden Knights inked a similar multi-year contract. Since beginning operations last fall, Circa Sports has made a concerted effort to engage with Chicago sports fans. In February, the organization partnered with Marquee Sports Network, the Cubs’ primary television network. The Blackhawks sweater featuring the Circa Sports patch will make its official debut on Friday during the draft. Circa will collaborate with the team to release the schedule for the next season.
“Growing up as a hockey fan, I’m overwhelmed with the opportunity, and the responsibility, that goes along with partnering with an Original Six team and a team with the most iconic home jersey in sports,” Circa Sports CEO Derek Stevens said in a statement. “We are ecstatic to showcase the new Blackhawks jersey with such a young and exciting team.”
In the NHL Draft on Friday in Las Vegas, the Blackhawks, who selected Connor Bedard as the first overall pick in 2023, are searching for a possible franchise player to team with Bedard and they hope to find that player with the second pick. In 68 games as a rookie, the 18-year-old Bedard scored 61 points and scored 22 goals, making him a finalist for the Calder Memorial Trophy. Bedard contributed to the popularity of hockey betting in Illinois, even though the Blackhawks rebuilt last season and finished with 52 points, their lowest total in a non-strike season in modern history.
The sportsbook at American Place in Waukegan and the Circa Sports Illinois mobile app are used by Circa Sports to conduct business in Illinois. It also owns the renowned Circa Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, which is home to the biggest sportsbook in the world. It is present in Nevada, Iowa, Colorado, Illinois, and Kentucky when it comes to internet betting.
Since the NHL made it legal to have sponsor logos on uniforms beginning with the 2022–2023 season, this is a sight that is becoming more and more regular. Today, the jerseys of five of the original six NHL teams bear sponsorship patches.
Among those sponsors, betting companies are becoming pretty well-known. The Vegas Golden Knights in Circa Sports’ home state already had a jersey sponsorship agreement in place, while the Washington Capitals had a long-standing agreement with Caesars that includes a jersey logo. Gila River Resorts & Casinos is a sponsor of the Arizona Coyotes. The NHL itself maintains relationships with a number of sports betting companies including Caesars, FanDuel, BetMGM, ESPN Bet and theScore Bet.
