June 25, 2024With the start of the 2024 college football season only a few months away it’s never too early to take a look at CFB futures odds. However, the upcoming campaign will be entirely different than what we’ve become accustomed to with realignment expanding the Power conferences while leading to the dissolution of the Pac-12, or what Bill Walton emphatically called, “the Conference of Champions!” Well, the Pac-12 never won a title in the College Football Playoff era and now four of those schools will attempt to do that as members of the Big Ten. The conference housing the defending CFP champion Michigan Wolverines added USC, Oregon and Washington, along with UCLA.
Michigan beat the Huskies in last season’s CFP Championship capping a perfect 15-0 season. But things have changed in Ann Arbor with coach Jim Harbaugh bolting for the NFL and record-setting QB J.J. McCarthy done. Michigan’s NCAAF championship odds at BetMGM have slipped as a result with the Georgia Bulldogs moving into the position of college football futures favorite. Some argued that UGA got robbed of a chance at a three-peat not being selected to the CFP following a loss to Alabama in the SEC title game. They were probably the best team last season with their 3-point setback to the Tide their only blemish.
To alleviate that situation the playoff tournament has expanded to 12 teams starting at the conclusion of the 2024 regular season. Teams have a greater margin for error but also have more games to deal with in order to hoist the hardware. Four teams surfaced with shorter than 10/1 odds led by Georgia with Ohio State, Texas and Oregon rounding out the quartet. A constant at the top of the odds board for nearly two decades under Nick Saban, the Alabama Crimson Tide begin a new era under Kalen DeBoer as the fifth favorite.

We see a lot of the same programs perched at the top of the NCAAF championship odds board because it’s tough to knock those clubs down a peg. They always get the best talent leaving other schools to fight over the scraps. Under Kirby Smart the Bulldogs have been nearly unbeatable the past three seasons going 42-2 overall with national championships in 2021 and 2022. They consistently boast a top defense and will have an edge over several teams with the return of quarterback Carson Beck.
A Heisman Trophy odds favorite, Beck threw for nearly 4,000 yards while completing 72.4 percent of his passes with 26 TD for the nation’s fifth highest scoring offense. Leading receiver Brock Bowers has moved on, but the Dawgs boast an abundance of talent on both sides of the football with their second units strong enough to compete for an expanded CFP berth.
Going 11-2 overall in each of the past three seasons hasn’t been good enough for the folks in Columbus. In each of those seasons the Ohio State Buckeyes succumbed to rival Michigan and were not invited to the CFP. The offense gets an overhaul with last year’s starter Kyle McCord in the transfer portal and Marvin Harrison Jr. drafted to the NFL. In steps K-State transfer Will Howard to man the offense with top recruit Jeremiah Smith his likely favorite target. OSU’s only date with a conference newcomer is a doozy with a Week 7 tilt in Eugene against the Ducks.
Texas and Oregon are the next two on the college football futures odds list. The hope for the Longhorns is that they don’t regret their decision to move to the strongest conference in the country. I’m sure those disbursement checks with plenty of zeroes will soften the blow. With games against Michigan, Oklahoma and UGA on the slate they aren’t going undefeated, but they could be battle-tested when the CFP field is announced.
The expanded playoff field opens the door to a myriad of possibilities. Penn State had the misfortune of playing in the same Big Ten division as Ohio State and Michigan thus denying them a chance at the playoff despite fielding some of the best teams in the country. And can you really eliminate Alabama from the NCAAF odds picture with Nick Saban retired? Kalen DeBoer did a masterful job at Washington leading the Huskies to the CFP championship game last season.
The Group of Five programs are guaranteed a seat at the CFP table with the Boise State Broncos from the Mountain West Conference boasting the shortest odds among the non-power schools. That isn’t saying much, though, since they are listed at more than 400/1.
