May 30, 2023Where will former Arizona Cardinals wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins end up? The soon-to-be 31-year-old produced a career-low 717 receiving yards last season, but he also started the season with a six-game suspension for violating the NFL’s PED rules. Hopkins, is a six-time 1,100-yard-plus receiver who has 71 career touchdowns. The Cardinals released Hopkins, ending his three seasons with Arizona. DraftKings sportsbook has the Buffalo Bills listed as the favorite to land Hopkins at odds of +300. The Kansas City Chiefs are second in DeAndre Hopkins odds at +400. The other three teams listed with single digit odds are the Baltimore Ravens, New York Jets and New England Patriots.
Hopkins recently stated that he would like playing with Josh Allen or Patrick Mahomes and he also mentioned Jalen Hurts and Justin Herbert, among others. Hopkins’ chances of going to the Philadelphia Eagles or Los Angeles Chargers is in the double-digits. Keep in mind that each NFL team is subject to a salary cap. The Bills have a little more than $3.1 million to spend on Hopkins, but they theoretically have the flexibility to combine him with Stefon Diggs. The best wideout tandem in the NFL would undoubtedly be this pair, but it is hard to see how Buffalo can afford Hopkins unless Hopkins drastically reduces his contract demands. He made over $19 million last year. With a little bit more than $2.8 million still on the books, the Chiefs’ predicament is even worse. The Ravens, on the other hand, have over $12.3 million in salary cap room. Baltimore has needed a top receiver to team up with tight end Mark Andrews and there is no question that Hopkins would dramatically upgrade the receiver’s room.
Don’t sleep in the New York Jets who would like to add a receiver for Aaron Rodgers. The Jets have $6.9 million in cap space but could create more by reworking the salaries of C.J. Mosley and Corey Davis. New York has already shown they are willing to go out and get help for Rodgers.
The Patriots badly need a top receiver and Hopkins has worked in the past with new Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien. New England is trying to get some help for quarterback Mac Jones and the Patriots have the money to give Hopkins a big deal. It is not something head coach Bill Belichick normally does, but Belichick is now losing more games than he ever has, so desperate times are here.
Another team to remember is the Dallas Cowboys who are under extreme pressure to win this season. They have about $9 million in cap space available and owner Jerry Jones always likes to make a big splash.
Another longshot to remember is New Orleans who has $13.6 million in cap space and a new quarterback in Derek Carr. And not to be forgotten is the Cleveland Browns who have Dehaun Watson who played with Hopkins in Houston.
