Edmonton Oilers 8-1
The Edmonton Oilers are the top choice in Stanley Cup futures odds. It all begins with Connor McDavid, who remains the greatest player in the world, and Leon Draisaitl, who the Oilers signed to an eight-year, $14 million (AAV) contract this offseason. The Oilers will be competitive as long as those two are playing. The Oilers have very good complimentary, including Mattias Ekholm and Evan Bouchard on the defensive end and Zach Hyman, a 50-goal scorer, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins up front. To bolster their offense, Edmonton added Jeff Skinner and Viktor Arvidsson. The Oilers also return Stuart Skinner in goal. He had a 2.45 goals-against and a .901 save % in the playoffs. Edmonton will be motivated to put last year’s disappointment behind them, as the Oilers rallied from 3-0 down to force a Game 7 in the Stanley Cup Final, only to lose.
Florida Panthers 9-1
The Panthers were defeated by the Vegas Golden Knights in the Stanley Cup Final in 2022–2023 and they were determined not to let it happen again. More than simply making it to the biggest series in hockey was on the line for them. In addition to making their second straight appearance in the Stanley Cup Final, they defeated the Oilers in seven games to win the Stanley Cup for the first time in the team’s history last season. They are the favorites to win the Eastern Conference going into 2024–25. That’s because the Panthers retain the majority of their core, including Sam Reinhart, who scored 57 goals last season. They also have Aleksander Barkov, Matthew Tkachuk and Carter Verhaeghe and a goaltender in Sergei Bobrovsky who knows how to win big games. Although Florida lost a few defensemen and some depth players, they still have enough offensive talent to win the Stanley Cup two years in a row.
Dallas Stars 11-1
The Stars fell short last season but they have a lot of young talent that could propel them to the Stanley Cup Final this season. The trio of Jason Robertson, Wyatt Johnston, and Roope Hintz topped the eight players who scored 50 or more points last season. The team also brings back veteran Matt Duchene, who had 65 points last year. With All-Star goaltender Jake Oettinger in the net, Miro Heiskanen and Thomas Harley solidifying the defense, the Stars a serious contender for the Stanley Cup this season.
Stanley Cup Betting Note
There is a fairly even split when it comes to choosing a preferred conference; of the past ten winners, 60% have come from Eastern teams, while 40% have come from Western teams. In the past ten years, the Penguins and Lightning have both won consecutive Stanley Cup Finals and since 1918, 16 teams in all have won consecutive titles.
Stanley Cup Pick – New Jersey Devils 10-1
Did you notice what New Jersey did in the off-season? The Devils went out and hired one of the best young coaches in the NHL in Sheldon Keefe. He did a very good job in Toronto with a bunch of underachieving players and now he gets to work with a number of young starts in Jersey. Not only does he have Jack Hughes, but he also has a goaltender in Jacob Markstrom who wants to prove he is the best in the league. Teams win with great goaltending and with a deep lineup. New Jersey has both and now they get a coach in Keefe who could turn New Jersey into a Cup contender on a regular basis.
