November 3, 2023The Seminole Tribe of Florida declared that it will launch sports betting, craps, and roulette at its land-based casinos next month. The tribe won’t wait for two lawsuits challenging the legality of its 2021 contract with the state to be settled. In a press statement, the tribe described the upcoming “A New Era in Florida Gaming” as having a staggered start. On December 7, the tribe’s South Florida venues, Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood, Seminole Classic Casino in Hollywood, and Seminole Casino Coconut Creek, will open up sports betting, craps and roulette. There will then be a debut on December 8 in Tampa and on December 11 in Brighton, which is close to Lake Okeechobee, and Immokalee, which is in Naples. The tribe did not provide a date for the launch of its internet platform, Hard Rock Bet.

When the Seminole Tribe increases their gaming possibilities, legal action against the tribe’s compact with Florida will probably still be pending in one federal and one state court. Although the U.S. Supreme Court rejected a motion on October 25 that would have required the tribe to remain offline, plaintiff West Flagler and Associates intends to file a request for the court to hear the issue by November 20. Ron DeSantis, the governor of Florida, has until December 1st to reply in a related dispute before the Florida Supreme Court.
The Seminole Tribe has decided to increase their gambling activities for the second time while their compact is being contested in court. The tribe opened its Hard Rock platform for 34 days in November 2021, but it was shut down by a federal district judge that ruled in favor of West Flagler. Since then, the lawsuit has been pending in federal court against the U.S. Department of the Interior. In June, an appellate court reversed the district court’s decision and ruled in favor of the tribe.
Marcellus Osceola Jr., the Seminole chairman, released a statement on Wednesday saying, “The Seminole Tribe thanks the State of Florida, the U.S. Department of the Interior, and the U.S. Department of Justice for defending our Compact. By working together, the Tribe, the State and the federal government achieved a historic legal victory.”
In December, the Seminole Tribe is looking for a great opening weekend that falls on Week 14 of the NFL season. On December 11, the Miami Dolphins will host the Tennessee Titans on Monday Night Football. The Jacksonville Jaguars will play the Cleveland Browns the day before, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will travel to Atlanta.
There are only 11 states in the United States that do not allow some form of sports betting with Florida being one of the eleven. Florida is at least one state where sports betting is in the news and a state where some form of sports betting is expected to begin in December.
