February 12, 2025For the first time since 1998 the Genesis Invitational will not be contested at the Riviera Country Club. Due to the recent wildfires that scorched a chunk of the Los Angeles area, the tournament was moved down south to Torrey Pines Golf Course in the San Diego suburb of La Jolla. That hasn’t prevented the game’s best from making an appearance in the PGA Tour’s third Signature Event of the season. Four of the top five players in the OWGR are scheduled to appear with No. 1 Scottie Scheffler the PGA golf odds betting favorite at Caesars. Torrey Pines has hosted the Farmers Insurance Open since the late 1960s with Harris English emerging with a victory in the most recent edition last month. This tournament also brings the West Coast Swing to an end with Hideki Matsuyama looking to become the first repeat winner since Phil Mickelson in 2009.
Tournament Notes: In addition to hosting the Farmers Insurance Open, Torrey Pines also welcomed the US Open in 2008 and 2021. Also a little less than half of the 72-player field teed it up a few weeks ago at the FIO, so there is enough of a baseline for players to make their game plan. It’s a layout that has its share of obstacles, mainly the length. At 7,765 yards it’s among the longest ever on Tour with thick rough also in play. And conditions could be dicey over the first two days with rain and wind in the forecast.

Genesis Invitational Matchup Picks
Jordan Spieth -110 vs. Viktor Hovland
He’s just a few starts removed from a prolonged injury absence that required surgery, but he has progressed well since returning. His first start in almost six months was rough with a T69 at Pebble Beach. But he go four rounds in due to the no-cut format and closed with his lowest score of the tournament. Spieth went 68 or better in all four rounds last week to finish T4 at the Phoenix Open, his best in more than a year.
Will Zalatoris +105 vs. Maverick McNealy
With a game that relates well to the behemoth that is Torrey Pines, Zalatoris is a good bet at plus odds in this matchup. He’s been lingering on the fringe of contention the last few tournaments finishing among the top 20 in four of his last seven starts but never inside the top 10. That could change this week on a track that’s yielded the ball-striker a playoff loss and two additional top 15s.
Collin Morikawa -110 vs. Justin Thomas
He doesn’t have the distance off the tee other players have, and that’s something needed this week, but Morikawa more than makes up for it with accuracy and strong putting. He had a MC at the Farmers last year that seemed to ignite his season. After that he went 21 of 22 with eight top 10s among his 18 top 25s in that span. He also has a pair of top 5s at Torrey Pines from the 2021 US Open and the 2023 FIO.
Thomas Detry -115 vs. Keegan Bradley
If Detry isn’t too ecstatic about his first Tour victory he’s a good bet in this matchup. Detry stomped the field by seven shots in Phoenix and he has a strong history at Torrey Pines most recently with his T15 last month that followed a T20 in 2024.
Harris English +110 vs. Byeong Hun An
Though he won here three weeks ago it might be a stretch to back English in the outright market. For one the field is much stronger and English has been inconsistent. But I’ll take him at plus odds in a matchup because of his past success on a course that can be unpredictable. Before his win at Torrey Pines last month, English grabbed a podium at the 2021 US Open giving him five top 10 finishes at the host venue.
