December 6, 2023The PGA Tour and the LPGA Tour will play the first mixed-team co-sanctioned event since 1999 in the Grant Thornton Invitational which begins on Friday. The format will be unique with 16 teams featuring PGA and LPGA players. The 16 mixed teams will play three formats; scramble, foursomes and modified four-ball. The first round will have the scramble format, the second round will feature foursomes which are alternate shot, while the third round will feature modified four ball. In that format, both players will tee off and then they will switch balls for their second shots and play that ball for the remainder of the hole. The lower score of the partners will count as the team score. The team of Tony Finau and Nelly Korda is listed as the favorite at odds of +600 at BetRivers. The only other team listed at single-digit odds is the team of Ludvig Aberg and Madelene Sagstrom. They are listed at odds of +750. Let’s look at Grant Thornton Invitational picks.

Venue: Tiburon Golf Club is a par 72 course that measures 7,382 yards for the men and 6,595 yards for the women. The course is host of the LPGA’s season-ending CME Group Championship. The course has a number of waste areas and water hazards.
Last Year: This is really the inaugural event, although some people think the event relates to the QBE Shootout, but the Grant Thornton Invitational is different, as PGA and LPGA players are on the same team.

Favorite
Tony Finau & Nelly Korda +600
It was another loss for the golf betting favorite last week when Viktor Hovland was nowhere to be found near the top of the leaderboard at the Hero World Challenge. This week we get Finau and Korda as the betting favorite. Who knows what will happen in this mixed team event, but I don’t take golf betting favorites that often and I see no reason to back Finau and Korda at this price.
Value Picks
Ludvig Aberg & Madelene Sagstrom +750
I think you can make a case to take Aberg since he is not the favorite. He is already one of the top golfers in the world and you can make a case he is the top golfer in this field, and yes, that includes Finau. Aberg is really that good. He should put Sagstrom in great position hole after hole.
Corey Conners & Brooke Henderson +1000
Team Canada is capable of having a good week and getting into contention. These two are excellent ball-strikers and they will be in position on nearly every hole to have success.
Denny McCarthy & Megan Khang +1000
These two are playing as well as they ever have and it definitely doesn’t hurt to have one of the top putters in the world in McCarthy on the team. He should have plenty of chances to birdies this weekend.
Sahith Theegala & Rose Zhang +1100
These two players were two of the top golfers when they were in college and they are both starting to hit their stride. They each got the first wins of their career this past season. I think they are going a bit under the radar this week and could contend for the win.
Joel Dahmen & Lilia Vu +1200
I can definitely see this team contending, as Vu is the top player on the LPGA Tour. She was the player of the year on the LPGA Tour winning four times, including two majors. Dahmen had five top 10 finishes this past season. I think this team has some value at odds of 12-1.
