If you’re not the favorite then you are considered a longshot. Some non-favorites just happen to be longer shots than others. The 2024 Belmont Stakes field has some of the top thoroughbreds in horse racing, including Preakness winner Seize The Grey and Kentucky Derby champion Mystik Dan, the only competitor in all three legs of horse racing’s Triple Crown. Those two, however, are not among the early horse race betting favorites. Edged out at the Kentucky Derby and with both career losses by a nose Sierra Leone sits atop the odds board.
The favorites at BetMGM are positioned there for a reason, but as we’ve seen recently handicapping the ponies isn’t an exact science. After all Seize The Grey was a 15/1 longshot at the Preakness. Value can be found when looking further down the odds board, and we don’t have to look far with 10 horses scheduled to run. The top of the Belmont Stakes odds board has four horses with 10/1 or shorter odds. The others have posted impressive horse racing results and all are 12/1 or greater. Are there are some sleepers in the group with a chance of pulling off an upset? We’ll visit a few down below.

Given the circumstances surrounding the 156th running of the Belmont Stakes horse race betting strategy will have to change. With construction taking place at Belmont Park the race was moved for the foreseeable future to Saratoga Race Course. With it comes a change in distance with essentially two furlongs lopped off the total distance making it equal in length to the Kentucky Derby. I guess for now at least we can no longer refer to the Belmont Stakes as “The Test of the Champion.”
We will not have a horse racing Triple Crown winner this year, but that doesn’t lessen the excitement for the race. Mystik Dan finished second by more than two lengths at the Preakness ending any chance of making history. And upsets have seemingly taken over horse racing results in recent years, especially in the bigger races. The longest shot on the mid-week board is Protective, who has two graded stakes races under his belt. He did finish third in the G2 Wood Memorial and G3 Peter Pan, but lost to three horses that are also running on Saturday.
Antiquarian appears to have some value at his price. A young colt that just started his career in January, he’s flying under the radar. After breaking his maiden in February, he was a disappointing sixth in the G2 Louisiana Derby. If not for a win at last month’s Peter Pan he’d likely have more substantial odds. Antiquarian has some good people in his corner with Hall of Fame trainer and four-time Belmont Stakes winner Todd Pletcher. Legendary John Velazquez will be on the mount.
A smaller field will benefit Honor Marie, who got bullied out of the gate at Churchill Downs and was running last at one point. He showed intense drive to rally for an eighth place finish and has proven to be a strong closer after coming from the rear to win the G2 Kentucky Jockey Club in November. He entered the Kentucky Derby following a runner-up in the 2024 Louisiana Derby.
Belmont Stakes Longshot Picks
The top of the horse racing odds board is shaky with Sierra Leone losing twice, including to Mystik Dan in the Kentucky Derby. In his quest for the Triple Crown Mystik Dan was overpowered by Seize The Grey. A lot has to go right for Dornoch to pull the upset, but he is capable and the smaller field will help him as well. He does better when running at the front of the pack earning a pair of graded wins with fast starts. The crowded Kentucky Derby field prevented him from getting to his comfort zone and the result was a distant 10th. At his price a few bucks could make a hefty payout. However, when it comes to the longshots the middle of the pack odds horses have significant clout with Honor Marie and Antiquarian standing out.
