January 29, 2025The Indiana Hoosiers will look to end a skid that’s seen them lose four of their last five games when they visit the Purdue Boilermakers in a Big Ten contest on Friday night. IU faces a tough task against No. 10 Purdue, which is coming off a rout of No. 21 Michigan and is 10-1 on its home floor. The Boilermakers are also on a massive heater winning eight of their last nine games overall while covering the college basketball betting line at Caesars sportsbook in seven of their last eight games. Purdue has won the last two meetings each by at least 20 points to earn the payout. The Boilers averaged more than 80 points in those games.

The Hoosiers have lost more games in the last two-plus weeks than they did in the first two months of the season telling us how tough the Big Ten Conference is. With a win over USC on Jan. 8 the record improved to 13-3 and the Hoosiers got a third straight payout. However, they lost their next two games to Iowa and Illinois each by 25 points. The skid was temporarily halted with a 77-76 overtime win against Ohio State, but the Hoosiers returned to their losing ways the last two games.
Though they are 14-7 overall the Hoosiers are 5-5 in Big Ten play with three of those setbacks on the road. A berth in the NCAA Tournament is a longshot since they won’t win the Big Ten tournament, but IU can give itself a chance by picking up some signature wins the rest of the season. Beating Purdue would definitely qualify and give the Hoosiers their first win over a ranked opponent. They lost 89-73 to then No. 3 Gonzaga in November and were throttled 94-69 by No. 19 Illinois a few weeks ago.
Their ability to score a lot of points is hindered by their 3-point shooting. The Hoosiers connect on just 32.4 percent of their triples and attempt the second-fewest threes in the conference. Leading scorer Oumar Ballo is a threat in the block averaging 14.5 points and 10.2 rebounds, but his effectiveness will be offset by Purdue’s interior defense. And the Hoosiers lack an outside shooting attack to contend against the better teams.
One of the most efficient teams on both ends of the floor in the Big Ten, the Boilermakers completely dismantled Michigan in their last game. They rank among the top 20 nationally shooting 49.3 percent from the field overall and nearly 39 percent from three-point range. A candidate for conference player of the year, Trey Kaufman-Renn leads the team averaging 18.1 points and 6.3 rebounds.
There is more to them, though. The Boilermakers got a near triple-double from Braden Smith in the 91-64 decision over the Wolverines last week. The Big Ten assist leader dished out 10 dimes and scored 24 points while hauling down seven rebounds. The trio of Kaufman-Renn, Smith and Fletcher Loyer account for more than 61 percent of Purdue’s offense, so slowing them is imperative for IU to have success. Unfortunately that’s easier said than done.
Purdue has been stingy on defense allowing the third fewest points in the Big Ten. Opponents shoot just over 30 percent from behind the arc against them and average 67.5 points. They were relentless against Michigan holding one of the better scoring teams in the league to 37 percent shooting and 6 of 29 three-point attempts while forcing 22 turnovers. Points could be at a premium, at least for Indiana, which is why backing the home team is a NCAAB betting odds pick.
