June 14, 2023Sports wagering handle for May 2023 in the state of Indiana was $283.4 million, down about $25 million from the same month last year, according to data released by the Indiana Gaming Commission. This maintains a pattern for Indiana, where handle has decreased each month since Ohio legalized sports betting in January relative to 2022.
Despite the decline in handle, operators still managed to bring in almost $10 million more in adjusted gross revenue than they did in May 2022, for a strong hold of 12 percent. For the month, the state collected more than $3.2 million in taxes related to sports wagering.
For the second consecutive month, FanDuel maintained its lead in handle with bets totaling $96.2 million. With a handle of almost $26 million, BetMGM finished in third place, surpassing Caesars Sportsbook’s $23.7 million. Additionally, BetMGM generated $3.4 million in revenue as opposed to $1.9 million for Caesars. In terms of revenue, FanDuel was in first place with $13.4 million to DraftKings’ $10.9 million.
BetRivers had a handle of $8.4 million and gross revenues of $701,497, while Barstool had a handle of $6.8 million and revenues of $495,326. PointsBet came in with a handle of $5.1 million and gross receipts of $495,326, followed by Hard Rock with a handle of $5.2 million and $96,125 in gross receipts.
WynnBet had a handle of nearly $2 million and gross receipts of $72,833, Betway had a handle of $286,215 and gross receipts of $31,915, Bally Bet had a handle of $259,623 and gross receipts of $25,706, Unibet had a handle of $234,971 and gross receipts of $16,956, and SBK had a handle of $197,191 and $15,228.
The summer months are the slowest months of the year for online sportsbooks, so it is not a huge surprise that Indiana didn’t have great numbers for the month of May. As noted earlier, what has also hurt Indiana’s cause is the state of Ohio legalizing sports betting. What is oftentimes forgotten, is that many states in the Midwest and the East are bunched together and it is easy for people to travel across state lines. Gamblers in Ohio don’t have to go outside their state to Indiana and that has meant a loss of revenue for the state of Indiana.
Revenues for all of the states will be somewhat slow for the next couple of months, especially with the NBA and NHL seasons coming to a close. The action really won’t pick up until August when college football and NFL preseason action begins. Sportsbooks get the bulk of their action during the fall and winter months when NFL action dominates the sports betting scene. It also helps that college football gets going and in the winter months you get basketball and hockey action supplementing football. It also helps that college basketball gets going in late November to add to the bottom line for online sportsbooks.
