Mark Sears made sure the Alabama Crimson Tide would not lose three games in a row by scoring 30 points in a 96-83 win over the Kentucky Wildcats on Saturday, Feb. 22. The outburst by Bama’s leading point producer allowed the Tide to cover the 12-point NCAAB odds point spread at Caesars sportsbook giving us a win on that part of our college basketball same game parlay. Unfortunately Sears came up three points shy of getting us a winning ticket as the teams cashed the UNDER on 181.
With consecutive losses to Auburn and Missouri still on their minds the Tide started slowly falling behind 30-18 about halfway through the opening half. The Cats used accurate shooting from three-point distance to build the 12-point advantage making four of their first six three-point attempts. Alabama finally woke up taking the lead behind an 18-2 run and entered halftime with a 47-40 advantage.

Sears followed up his 35-point game against Missouri by hitting 8 of 17 field goals and all 11 free throws helping the nation’s highest scoring team maintain its pace. The Tide has scored at least 90 points in 14 games, including the last two and in three of the last four. Aden Holloway made 5 of 12 three-pointers for 19 points and Clifford Omoruyi was a perfect 4 of 4 from the floor with an 11-point, 15-rebound double-double. Alabama shot 52.5 percent from the floor and was 11 of 31 from behind the arc.
After their early spurt the Wildcats went cold from deep making just five of their final 20 three-point attempts. They were impacted by the absence of starters Jaxson Robinson and Lamont Butler and got no help from leading scorer Otega Oweh. The only player in the SEC to score at least 10 points in every game this season, the Cats’ leading scorer had just two points and was 1 of 9 from the field. Kentucky lost for the sixth time in its last 10 games.
Kentucky at Alabama Same Game Parlay Pick
With nine of the 16 teams in the SEC nationally ranked you get an elite matchup just about every game. We saw a game between the top two teams in the country last week and this one on Saturday between the No. 17 Kentucky Wildcats and No. 4 Alabama Crimson Tide might be just as good. Bama saw its seven-game winning streak end and lost for just the fourth time this season last Saturday to No. 1 Auburn. On the same day the Wildcats were a 4.5-point road underdog at Caesars sportsbook in their game against unranked Texas, just more proof that the conference is the strongest in the country. The Tide won an epic contest 102-97 inside Rupp Arena in mid-January in the first meeting between the squads winning outright as a 2.5-point dog on the college basketball betting line.

It doesn’t get any easier for the Wildcats, who lost at unranked Texas last Saturday, their third setback in five games, and host Vanderbilt on Wednesday ahead of their matchup with Bama. They were hampered in the Texas game by the absence of starters Jaxson Robinson and Lamont Butler, the team’s second and third leading scorers. Heck, missing just one of those players would put them at a big disadvantage against most teams in the SEC.
Robinson and Butler are two of the better three-point shooters on the team and their loss impacted Kentucky in a number of areas. The Cats are among the 25 best three-point shooting teams in the country but they struggled against the Horns making just 6 of 24 attempts. Another area impacted was ball security. The team already lost point guard Kerr Kriisa and with Butler on the shelf the Cats committed an uncharacteristic 15 turnovers against the Horns, five more than their season average.
Taking the reins at Texas was Otega Oweh, who scored 20 points, and Amari Williams. Hitting 6 of 10 shots, Williams had a double-double with 18 points and 12 boards. Without Butler and/or Robinson Kentucky has a harder time winning. Those two combined for 28 points and five three-pointers in the first meeting and the Cats lost. They will have to play their best game of the season to win this matchup.
With a chance to beat rival and No. 1 ranked Auburn while also tying the Tigers atop the SEC standings, Bama came up empty. And more discouraging was that it happened at home. The Tide never led but they did rally from a 14-point second half deficit to tie the game only to falter down the stretch.
Alabama showed how explosive they can be on offense in their rally, but they had difficulties shooting the basketball. Collectively they shot just 38.6 percent from the field and were 5 of 26 from behind the arc. Bama averages more than 90 points to lead the country and they’ve scored at least 80 points in eight straight while hitting the century mark in three of those games. They play at a fast pace allowing opponents to get more possessions. They cashed the OVER on the college basketball odds five times in their last seven games.
In their earlier win over Kentucky Bama’s best players were their best players. Leading scorer Mark Sears made four three-pointers and had 24 points and nine assists. Second leading scorer Grant Nelson hit 7 of 13 field goals for a game-high 25 points. We probably won’t see a lot of defense in this matchup and there are too many good shooters on both sides to pick up the slack if someone goes cold. The total will be up there but I like the teams to hit the OVER in a back and forth affair.
