Two teams reign supreme in Spain’s La Liga. Real Madrid and Barcelona have won 15 of the last 16 titles, and they are the two most decorated clubs in Spain by a huge margin. They meet at least twice annually in the biggest club rivalry in the world, El Clasico.

Real Madrid is the most successful club not just in Spain, but in the world. This team has won La Liga 34 times and finished runner-up in the league 23 times. They won just two league titles before the 1950s, but they have since been absolutely dominant. Alfredo Di Stefano was the club’s first star, and Ferenc Puskas helped take this team to another level with 156 goals in 180 games. They helped Real Madrid win the first five Champions League titles, and that put the club well on its way to a record 13 Champions League crowns.

Barcelona is the second-most successful team in Spain. The Blaugrana have won 26 La Liga titles and finished runner-up 26 times. They won the first La Liga title back in 1929, but it took Barca 16 years to win their second championship. Since that point, Barca has had dominant stretches, and they have closed the gap on Real Madrid since 1990. Barca have won 16 La Liga titles and five Champions League titles in this stretch.

Madrid’s second club is often in Real Madrid’s shadow, but Atletico Madrid has had a lot of success in its own right. They have 10 league titles to their credit, occasionally rising up to take down the two juggernauts in Spain. Unfortunately, Atletico have yet to win a Champions League, but they have finished runner-up three times.

The pride of Basque Country was Spain’s first dynasty. Athletic Bilbao won La Liga four times between 1930 and 1936 before the league had to be stopped due to the Spanish Civil War. They have 23 Copa del Rey wins to their name, and they won the league in consecutive years in the early 1980s, but their policy of only playing people with Basque heritage does hold them back. However, that also gives Bilbao a strong identity that other clubs long to have.

Valencia is the only other Spanish team to win more than two La Liga titles. The Bats have had a few different moments of excellence during their history, most recently at the turn of the century. They also finished runner-up in the Champions League in consecutive years in 2000 and 2001.

Sevilla’s only league title came during the 1945-46 season. They finished runner-up in the league four times by the mid-1950s, but they haven’t cracked the top two since that point. However, Sevilla do have a record six Europa League titles to their credit.
