July 25, 2023Since sports betting became legal in Louisiana in 2022, approximately $3.7 billion has been placed on athletic events, according to Louisiana Gaming Control Board Chairman Ronnie Johns. Louisiana has received over $1.13 billion in wagers during the first five months of 2023, according to Oddspedia, a website that tracks sports betting odds and data. This places Louisiana 15th overall among all states with legalized sports betting. According to Johns, wagers totaling close to $3.7 billion have been placed in Louisiana since sports betting was became legal there in November 2021. When population size is taken into account, he claimed that Louisiana most likely ranks among the top 10 states in terms of total amount wagered.
Johns described the figures as “quite astonishing” during a recent discussion. “We are without a doubt among the top 10 in the nation in terms of per capita.” LSU Baseball won its eighth national championship in June, while the retail and mobile sportsbook operations enjoyed net earnings of over $12.5 million during that same month. For the month, sports betting brought in around $1.7 million in tax income for the state.

Even though the sportsbooks lost $1.4 million on baseball wagers in June, they made money on parlays and all other sports. Retail and mobile sportsbooks have made net profits of approximately $140 million off of 1.29 billion total wagers through the first half of 2023. So far this year, the state has collected around $17.7 million in taxes. Louisiana’s largest mobile sports wager was $4.5 million on the Bengals for Super Bowl LVI.
Through June of 2022, the sportsbooks’ net profits have nearly doubled year to date, increasing by 87.4% from $74.7 million. The state’s tax revenue has increased by 52.1 percent from $11.6 million and the number of wagers has increased by 37.5 percent from roughly 940.3 million.
In 2023, mobile sports, which debuted in January 2022, accounted for the majority of bets, earnings, and tax receipts. As of this writing in 2023, mobile bets have accounted for 89.6% of all wagers, 88.6% of all winnings, and 90.4 % of all tax income. Mobile bets accounted for 83.6 percent of total wagers in 2022, 83 percent of net winnings, and 88.7 percent of all sports betting-related state taxes.
Mobile sportsbooks have operated in Louisiana since its launch, taking in $278.1 million in net winnings and around $46.6 million in taxes for the state. 3.12 billion wagers have been placed during that time. Since their November 2021 debut, the retail sportsbooks have taken in $545.8 million in total wagers, $61.1 million in net profits, and $6.1 million in state taxes. Overall, sports betting in Louisiana has generated close to 3.67 billion wagers since November 2021, $339.2 million in net profits for the bookies, and $52.7 million in tax income for the state.
