The top 25 matchup in the Big Ten between the Michigan Wolverines and Purdue Boilermakers on Friday, Jan. 24 wasn’t much of a contest. No. 11 Purdue rebounded from its first home loss of the season, 73-70 to Ohio State in its previous game, taking out built up frustration in a 91-64 victory. The Boilermakers easily covered the 4-point line at Caesars sportsbook while going OVER the posted total of 150 giving us a win on our college basketball same game parlay.
The No. 21 Wolverines didn’t help themselves turning the ball over 22 times and making just 6 of 29 three-pointers in their second straight setback. Overall they shot 37 percent from the field and never recovered after turnovers on each of their first two possessions put them in an early hole. Purdue scored 13 of the game’s first 15 points and led by as many as 29 points in the first half before settling for a 51-26 halftime advantage.

Purdue star and leading scorer Trey Kaufman-Renn was limited to 15 points making 7 of 12 field goals, but that didn’t stop the Boilermakers from putting up their third highest point total of the season. Braden Smith flirted with a triple double scoring 24 points on 10 of 17 shooting from the field with 10 assists and seven rebounds. The Big Ten leader in assists per game recorded double digit dimes for the fifth time in his last nine games.
Since early December the Wolverines have been an offensive machine scoring at least 80 points in each of its previous 10 games while ranking among the top 20 nationally in scoring. They are also one of the better shooting clubs making more than half their field goals for the season, but collectively were 20 of 54 from the field. They just didn’t have it in this matchup putting up their lowest point total of the season. However, they did cash the OVER on the college basketball odds for a seventh straight game.

A top 25 matchup between clubs near the top of the Big Ten standings takes place on Friday when the No. 21 Michigan Wolverines visit the No. 11 Purdue Boilermakers. A drop in the rankings is imminent after Purdue blew a 16-point lead and had its seven-game winning streak snapped by unranked Ohio State on Tuesday night. Meanwhile, Michigan rebounded from a crushing loss at Minnesota to edge Northwestern on Sunday. Both teams are a game back of Michigan State, which has yet to lose a conference game in seven tries. Purdue has had the better of the series recently winning three straight and four of the last five, but Michigan has earned the money covering the college basketball betting line in eight of the last 10 encounters.

Any setback is hard to take but some losses are worse than others. Riding a five-game winning streak with double-digit victories in their last two, the Wolverines were upset, 84-81, in overtime by the Golden Gophers as a 10.5-point road favorite. Minnesota entered that game without a Big Ten win but Michigan squandered a 10-point second half lead and committed 13 turnovers. The game was decided on a half court buzzer beater handing Michigan its fourth loss.
What makes Michigan an interesting team is that its four losses have been by a total of eight points against teams with winning records. Combined the quartet of Wake Forest, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Minnesota have a winning percentage of 67.6. UM beat Northwestern, 80-76, at home in overtime on Sunday to avoid a second straight upset. It was a rough outing for one of the top offensive teams in the country. The Wolverines shot a season-low 36 percent from the field and made just 7 of 27 three-pointers. They still reached the 80-point mark in a 12th consecutive game and cashed the OVER in a sixth straight outing.
Despite their subpar performance against Northwestern the Wolverines are among the best nationally scoring the basketball. They average 84.6 points and rank among the top 5 with a 50.6 team field goal percentage. All five regular starters average in double-figures led by Vladislav Goldin at 16.4. He scored 31 points on 9 of 16 shooting against Northwestern making nearly as many shots as the rest of the team (13).
Purdue had won its first nine home games earning payouts in six of them before a stunning, 73-70, loss to Ohio State on Tuesday night. The Boilers blew a 16-point lead and made just three 3-point baskets as their 7-game winning streak was halted. Purdue was money in the previous six contests before losing outright as a 10-point favorite. OSU made shots down the stretch against a Purdue defense that’s been reliable. The Buckeyes made 8 of 12 triples in the second half to overcome the deficit.
In seven games after losing to Auburn on Dec. 21, Purdue clamped down defensively holding opponents to 68 points or less. Three of those teams didn’t even crack the 60-point barrier. Purdue ranks third in the Big Ten allowing 67.7 points per game. As stingy as they’ve been on defense the Boilermakers have cashed the OVER in seven of their 10 home games, including the last three.
The offense may not be as diverse as Michigan’s but the Boilermakers have the potential Big Ten player of the year in Trey Kaufman-Renn. He scored a season-high 26 points on 11 of 16 shooting in the loss to Ohio State and averages 18.3 points on 59.6 percent shooting from the field. He gets help from Big Ten assist leader Braden Smith, who averages 15.0 points along with 8.9 dimes. I don’t anticipate Michigan struggling to shoot the ball leaving points on the court for two efficient offenses. I also expect Purdue to recover after a stunning home loss to cover the college basketball odds.
