Rivalry games are always more difficult to handicap. And when two good teams are tangling anything can happen. Playing as a 3-point road dog on the college basketball betting line at Caesars sportsbook against the Michigan Wolverines on Friday, Feb. 21 in a battle of top 20 teams, the Michigan State Spartans took over sole possession of first place in the Big Ten with a 75-62 outright victory. MSU’s third straight win made our college basketball same game parlay a loser.
Going for their seventh straight win the Wolverines held a 38-34 halftime lead. However, the Spartans got hot in the second half getting three three-pointers from Tre Holloman in a roughly 90 second span midway through the second half to seize control. Holloman finished with 18 points on 6 of 10 shooting overall and those were his only three-pointers of the game. Three other players reached double figures with Jase Richardson netting a team-high 21 points.

We successfully backed the UNDER on our parlay thanks to Michigan putting up its lowest point total of the season. They didn’t help their chances by going just 5 of 21 from behind the arc and 11 of 18 from the free throw line. Vladislav Goldin paced the Wolverines with 21 points making 7 of 11 field goals and Danny Wolf added 11 points, seven rebounds and eight assists. The three guard lineup of Nimari Burnett, Tre Donaldson and Rubin Jones, though, combined to go 7 of 16 from the field and 3 of 11 from deep.
The Spartans won their third in a row over their rival and have now won five of the last seven meetings. Meanwhile, Michigan’s run of futility at the betting window continued. The Wolverines have just one payout in their last 10 games after failing to cover. The teams meet again in a few weeks in the regular season finale.

Not only is this a massive rivalry but the top 20 matchup between the Michigan State Spartans and Michigan Wolverines is for first place in the Big Ten standings. A six-game winning streak moved the Wolverines into the top spot one-game ahead of the Spartans, who have dropped three of five heading into Tuesday’s game with Purdue. That game will also have an impact on the conference standings since Purdue is just a half-game behind Sparty. Michigan will have the benefit of a few extra days of rest following their 86-83 win over Ohio State on Sunday. Playing as a 1-point road dog on the college basketball betting line the Wolverines earned their first payout in nine games at Caesars sportsbook.

The short term results look a lot better than the bigger picture for Michigan State. They have just two wins in their last five games but they’ve won two of their last three getting a huge road win over Illinois on Saturday that ended a two-game road skid. Things looked bleak in the Illinois game with Sparty trailing by as many as 16 points in the first half. They chipped away to trail by just four at halftime then had a dominant second half to secure the victory.
Jaxon Kohler led four players in double figures with a game-high 23 points making 9 of 15 overall and 4 of 5 three-point attempts. Kohler averages just 8.2 points for the season but has scored at least 14 points in two of the last three games. The Spartans average nearly 80 points and shoot close to 47 percent from the field, but they’ve been hampered by inconsistent if not bad three-point shooting all season.
As team they’re 29.1 percent from deep and the triple was all but abandoned against Illinois. They had a nice percentage but shot just 12 treys instead using a size advantage down low to score 40 points in the paint. And we saw Sparty’s defense clamp down with the game on the line. Boasting one of the better field goal percentage defenses in the country, MSU held Illinois without a basket and point over the last 8 ½ minutes closing the game on a 15-0 run. The Illini missed their last 18 field goals and shot just 38.1 percent for the game.
If this is a close game there’s a strong chance the Wolverines win it. Every game during their current winning streak was decided by four points or less and their last victory before the streak began was a four-pointer over Northwestern. UM hasn’t won a game by more than four points since knocking off Washington 91-75 on Jan. 12. All those close games have hurt UM at the betting window as well. The Wolverines had lost eight straight games against the college basketball point spread until beating Ohio State outright.
With a pair of 7-foot weapons in Vladislav Goldin and Danny Wolf the Wolverines could make life miserable for Sparty. Taking an opponent out of its comfort zone is a win in itself and MSU won’t have the edge in the frontcourt. The two big men each had a double-double against the Buckeyes with Goldin having 20 points and 10 boards and Wolf going for 17 and 11. They also combined to shoot 61.5 percent from the field.
I really like Michigan’s balance with a pair of bigs who can run the floor, shoot and play defense. They are complemented by Tre Donaldson, Roddy Gayle and Nimari Barnett, who all average more than 10 points per game. One of the top rebounding teams in the country, Michigan had 17 on the offensive end held a 43-28 advantage on the glass against Ohio State. Not allowing MSU inside will be enough to sway the outcome.
