Cincinnati Reds vs. Chicago White Sox
A pitcher’s duel flying under the radar just might go down on the Southside of Chicago Saturday afternoon when the Reds and White Sox square off in the second game of their interleague series at Guaranteed Rate Field. Even with key cogs to the offense out of commission right now, the Redlegs rate out above average offensively with the unit averaging 5.1 runs per game (#11) while hitting .242 as a team (#15). While its amounted to the over cashing in six of nine played games, I foresee Spencer Steer and Co. having their hands full with Garrett Crochet whose looked every bit the big-time starter Chicago’s asked him to be after allowing 11 hits and 4 ER with a 21:1 K/BB ratio over 18 combined innings. He’ll be in line to add to that already impressive strikeout tally in start No. 4 with Cincy owners of the league’s second-worst K rate (28.2%). Opposing him will be Graham Ashcraft who impressed in his season debut registering a quality start against the Phillies by tossing six innings of 2 ER ball with 5 K and a lone walk. No offense has been worse than Chicago’s which averages a paltry 1.78 runs per game! With that, I expect both starters to shine early and go deep into this one which will have us playing it safe and backing the F5 under so as to avoid both bullpens which rank out in the league’s bottom third.

Texas Rangers vs. Houston Astros
I’m hoping the Rangers take the finale of the AL West rival’s four-game series on Monday afternoon so as to set up what would be a huge revenge spot for the homebased Astros in Saturday’s pitching rematch. Andrew Heaney and Framber Valdez will square off in that matchup, and the former is an arm I simply don’t trust. Texas’ southpaw was equally as mediocre on the road as he was at home last season, but shockingly only allowed 14 hits and 6 ER with a 16:11 K/BB ratio in four starts against Houston. Yet to earn a decision or serve up a long ball to date, Valdez is the bonafide staff ace of the Astros that will be looking to settle the score against a Rangers offense that peppered him pretty good a season ago. After serving up six walks in his 2024 debut, the lefty didn’t walk a single batter and struck out five in his second go-round against the Blue Jays. No team mashed southpaws better than the Rangers a season ago, but that hasn’t been the case early on in 2024 (#13). Look for the lefty to be locked in and for his offense to give him the run support needed to tally his first win of the year in front of the hometown faithful.

Chicago Cubs vs. Seattle Mariners
Fingers crossed Emerson Hancock is still in the M’s starting rotation and lined up to make his third start once Saturday night comes around with the amount of batting practice the 24-year old has offered up in his first two turns. After tossing 5.1 innings of unimpressive ball to help lead Seattle to the win over Cleveland in his debut, the righty was ripped by the Brew Crew for 11 hits (2 HR) and 8 ER to take his first loss of the MLB betting season. Chicago will be another tough test with it already faring well against his arsenal that mostly includes sinkers, changeups, and sliders. He better be on red alert when Seiya Suzuki and Christopher Morel step up to the dish! Same goes for the Mariners entire offense with Shota Imanaga looking dominant through his first two MLB starts in allowing 4 hits, 0 ER, and no walks while racking up 12 K through 10 combined innings of work. Though this will be his first road start in the Bigs, I fully expect him to shine against a Seattle lineup averaging 3.1 runs per game (#26) that’s slugging .348 against LHP (#22) all the while striking out at the highest rate in the league (29.4%).
