Sticking with the Windy City theme of the season’s opening same-game parlay piece, let’s head to Arlington where the defending World Series champion Texas Rangers will open up the defense of their title against the Chicago Cubs. Each team is currently lined amongst the favorites to take home the Commissioner’s Trophy this season with Texas lined 15-1 choices to repeat at Caesars, while Chicago checks in at 28-1. Though the Cubs didn’t do nearly as much with the roster as the fan base would’ve liked in the offseason, the hope is that Craig Counsell proves to be the new toy that helps push this team over the top in the NL Central and compete with the league heavyweights for bragging rights. In allowing 0.7 home runs and only 8.7 hits per nine innings, his stuff translated regardless of venue and I expect him to pick right back up where he left off in start No. 1 of the 2024 baseball betting season. Nathan Eovaldi and his right arm enter the 14th year of his playing career coming off an exemplary season that proved to be one of main reasons why Texas came from out of nowhere to win a World Series title. He went 12-5 with a 3.63 ERA and 8.3 K/9, but allowed nearly 3.0 walks per nine which proved to be his highest since 2019 when he jumped the shark. The 7.3 hits allowed per nine stand as a career-best that can be mostly attributed to the stellar defense assembled behind him. The negative regression monster paid him a short visit last season. This time, I expect a healthy dose of regression to occur for the now 34-year old. That likely won’t occur right out of the chute however, so look for Steele and Eovaldi to partake in an early pitcher’s duel before the Cubs burst the floodgates late and Fly the W getting Steele in the win column in the process.
