The New York Giants were a boon to many a bankrolls a season ago after winning nine games and punching a ticket to the second season. More importantly, the GMEN went a moneymaking 13-4 against the NFL odds, and logged the franchise’s first playoff win since winning Super Bowl XLVI. As great a bounceback season it was, the end result still amounted to a third place finish within the NFC East with the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys each scoring 12 or more wins. Both teams look to be just as strong if not better than last year, so it’ll once again be an uphill climb for this team if it’s to once again be another viable option within the division. As magical a ride it was throughout the 2022-23 NFL betting season, I’m not as high on the GMEN as I was a season ago. The schedule is much tougher. The Saquon Barkley dilemma could prove to be an issue in-season. The defense was one of the worst in the league and not much was done to dramatically improve that side of the ball in my opinion. In Brian Daboll I trust, but it won’t be a smooth ride.

Daboll did a tremendous job calling the shots in his inaugural Big Apple campaign. He outmaneuvered a number of opponents and utilized his smarts to help lead New York to some wins they likely shouldn’t have acquired. The job done with Daniel Jones proved to be worth its weight in salt after he threw for a career-high 3,205 yards and 15:5 TD/INT ratio while adding another 700+ yards on the ground with seven touchdown saunters. The former Duke Blue Devil looked like a completely different player, and his transformation helped lead Daboll to 2022 Coach of the Year Award honors. It got him a payday as well! New York’s pass catching corps was decimated by the injury bug last year, so upper management brought in some new weapons in WR Parris Campbell and TE Darren Waller to see if Jones’ transformation can continue on an upward ascension. Tennessee’s Jalin Hyatt was also selected in the draft. Target depth was a major problem area heading into the offseason and it looks to have been addressed.

The hype machine is real evidenced by New York getting to play a total of five games under the lights in prime time. Jones and Barkley proved to be a dynamic 1-2 punch in Daboll’s attack, and that once again figures to be the case in 2022-23 provided the injury bug doesn’t get to either of them. Adding to the offense’s firepower will be an entirely new cast of pass catchers with Darius Slayton, Isaiah Hodgins, and Daniel Bellinger still in the mix. The limited defensive improvements should help make an impact provided last year’s No. 1 pick and a number of other holdovers can stay healthy and take the unit to the next level. If the defense can drastically improve from its 25th overall ranking, the Giants should be able to win at least eight games this season.

Case for the Under

The Giants will face one of the toughest schedules in the NFL regardless of Sharp Football Analysis ranking it No. 19 overall. The opener against Big D will be a big one with the Cowboys sweeping the season rivalry each of the last two seasons. That month-long stretch that entails at San Francisco, vs. Seattle, at Miami, and at Buffalo from Week 3-6 could prove to be a killer and put the team behind the proverbial 8-ball right out of the chute. Truthfully, it doesn’t ease up the rest of the way either with games also scheduled against the Jets, Patriots, Packers, and Saints all followed up by both meetings with the Eagles in the last three weeks. NY got the benefit of running up against a number of questionable offenses led by middling quarterbacks last season. That’s far from the case in 2023-24!

Provided Barkley is 100 percent motivated to play knowing he didn’t get paid, the offense should be in good shape. That frame of mind is to be determined on the other side of the ball where the Giants were below average and sorely in need of help. DT A’Shawn Robinson was brought in to help stop the run, while CB Deonte Banks was snagged in the NFL Draft to improve the secondary. But for there to be any improvement, guys like Azeez Ojulari and Kayvon Thibodeaux will need to stay on the field with the duo only combining for 21 starts. If not for forcing a number of turnovers at the most opportune of times, this defense would’ve been the reason why it ultimately missed the postseason. Provided health isn’t an issue once again, this unit could turn some heads.

I just don’t know if the Giants are ready to hang with the big boys. Evidenced by the 38-7 beat down in the playoffs, that doesn’t look to be the case. The 36-9 regular season loss to the 49ers wasn’t pretty either! Even if Jones earns his keep and Barkley remains healthy and motivated, the GMEN won’t experience the same type of turnover luck. It’s also running up against a much tougher schedule than last year’s which was expected to be the easiest in the league entering 2022. Though painful, I have to look to the low side of this impost with the schedule nothing short of a nightmare leading up to the Week 13 bye.
