Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus begins the 2024 NFL season as the favorite to win NFL Coach of the Year. It was just a year ago that Eberflus was floundering with the Bears and many people didn’t think he would be around as the head coach in 2024. Things have definitely changed, as the Bears finished last season strongly and general manager Ryan Poles is in full support of Eberflus. Right behind Eberflus in Coach of the Year odds at BetMGM is Los Angeles Chargers new head coach Jim Harbaugh and new Atlanta Falcons head coach Raheem Morris. Let’s look at NFL Coach of the Year odds and our NFL Coach of the Year picks.

Matt Eberflus is getting a lot of attention heading into the 2024 NFL season because the Chicago Bears are getting a lot of attention. The Bears are set up to win this season with rookie Caleb Williams and a strong supporting cast. While there is definitely a chance for Eberflus to succeed this season and win the NFL Coach of the Year Award, there is also a chance that Chicago disappoints and they get off to a slow start and he becomes the first coach fired.
Contenders
Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh is also getting a lot of attention in NFL betting markets for NFL Coach of the Year. Harbaugh is coming off his college football national championship at Michigan and he is still remembered for how quickly he turned the San Francisco 49ers around, leading them to a Super Bowl. Harbaugh is known as a good quarterback coach and he is expected to get the most out of Justin Herbert.
I am not sure why Raheem Morris is listed as one of the top contenders to win the NFL Coach of the Year award in 2024. Morris has been a bust everywhere he has been in terms of being a head coach. Morris went 17-31 in his three years with Tampa Bay and he didn’t do any better as interim coach of the Falcons in 2020 when he went 4-7. The Falcons went out and spent a lot of money to bring in Kirk Cousins to be their quarterback and that is why optimism is high in Atlanta. Morris will have to prove he can be a successful head coach before I buy into the hype on the Falcons.
DeMeco Ryans did a great job last season in leading the Houston Texans to the AFC South title. Houston went out and made a number of big moves in the off-season so the Texans are poised to take an even bigger step forward in 2024. The Texans won’t surprise anyone this season, but Ryans may well deliver and lead Houston to playoff success and he could be worth a shot in terms of NFL Coach of the Year odds.
Matt LaFleur did a nice job with Green Bay a year ago, but it will be hard for him to duplicate that success this year, as the Packers won’t sneak up on anyone. He is probably overvalued at NFL odds of +1400.
Shane Steichen did a good job with the Colts a year ago and really didn’t get much credit for it. The problem with backing Steichen this season in terms of NFL Coach of the Year odds is that Indianapolis is in the same division as Houston.
It is hard to get too excited about Jonathan Gannon of the Cardinals, as he is still stuck with Kyler Murray has his quarterback. It is not much different for Brian Callahan in Tennessee, as he has Will Levis under center. Perhaps Robert Saleh has some value at odds of +1800. If the Jets take off with Aaron Rodgers this season and win as expected, Saleh could get some credit.
NFL Coach of the Year Picks
The love for Eberflus and the Bears is definitely too much for me. I think there is more value on Harbaugh with the Chargers winning NFL Coach of the Year. I also think Ryans is worth a look at odds of +1400.Check out the latest NFL Coach of the Year odds at BetMGM.
