August 7, 2024NFL Preseason Week 1 Picks Recap – Thursday, August 8-Sunday August 11, 2024
The first week of NFL Week 1 preseason action began on Thursday, August 8 with New England routing Carolina 17-3 and the New York Giants beating Detroit 14-3. There were three games on Friday, August 9, nine on Saturday, August 10 and two more on Sunday, August 11. Defenses dominated for the most part in Week 1 as most teams held their starters out or played them sparingly. We hit one of our three parlays which meant a profitable NFL Preseason Week 1. Let’s look at how we did with our NFL Preseason Week 1 parlay picks.
NFL Preseason Week 1 Favorites Parlay Recap
We went with three parlays in NFL Preseason Week 1, a favorites parlay, an underdog parlay and a line moves parlay. The favorites parlay never had a chance as Cleveland was completely outplayed by Green Bay and lost 23-10. The Browns didn’t play their starters and the second string barely saw any action, while the Packers got a quick TD drive from Jordan Love. The Cowboys and Rams didn’t play their starters and it was an ugly game with poor performances by the backup quarterbacks. Trey Lance did nothing to show that he is ready to back up Dak Prescott in Dallas and the Cowboys lost 13-12.
NFL Preseason Week 1 Underdogs Parlay Recap
The underdog parlay had us taking Houston against Pittsburgh and Denver against Indianapolis and both teams were winners. The Texans dominated the Steelers in a game that was never in doubt. C.J. Stroud got some brief action and threw a TD pass and the Texans have a strong trio of backup quarterbacks. The Steelers got decent play out of Justin Fields for a few drives and then didn’t do anything until late in the game, as the Texans won 20-12.
The Broncos outscored the Colts in the highest scoring game of NFL Week 1 preseason action, winning 38-34. Bo Nix played well and looks like he is on track to be the Broncos starting quarterback in Week 1 of the regular season. Jarrett Stidham did not play well in relief of Nix but Zach Wilson played well in the second half and led Denver to 21 second-half points.
NFL Preseason Week 1 Line Moves Parlay Recap
The line moves parlay had us taking the Eagles minus the points against the Ravens and the Raiders minus the points against the Vikings. The line move worked with Philadelphia, as they beat the Ravens 16-13. The Ravens long preseason winning streak ended last year so they didn’t have the incentive they had in previous years. The starters for both teams didn’t play and the backups did little so it was rookie Devin Leary against Tanner McKee at quarterback. Baltimore’s Leary led a game-tying drive but Philadelphia’s Jake Elliott finally made a field goal to win it for the Eagles after Baltimore quarterback Emory Jones fumbled with just second remaining after just coming into the game.
The line move parlay failed when the Raiders lost by a point to the Vikings. The Raiders blew a 20-7 halftime lead, as Minnesota rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy threw a pair of touchdown passes in the third quarter. The Raiders pulled ahead in the fourth quarter 23-21, but the Vikings got a 38-yard field goal from Will Reichard at the buzzer to win 24-23.
NFL Preseason Week 1 action gets underway on Thursday with two games, as the Carolina Panthers visit the New England Patriots and the Detroit Lions visit the New York Giants. We got a taste of NFL action last week in the Hall of Fame Game, but now all 32 teams will be playing in Week 1 NFL preseason action. NFL Network will be televising a total of six games, including both of Sunday’s game with Denver at Indianapolis and Dallas at the Rams. One thing that is clear about NFL preseason action is that lines move a lot. News comes out about playing time for the starters and quarterback rotations and bettors pounce on the NFL odds. In the regular season NFL lines don’t move a great deal but with NFL preseason odds it is not unusual at all to see a line move more than three points. We’ll take some of those line moves into consideration as we put together a few NFL preseason Week 1 parlay picks.

NFL Preseason Week 1 Favorites Parlay
Cleveland Browns -5 vs. Green Bay Packers
Dallas Cowboys -4 at Los Angeles Rams
When it comes to the preseason for me it is all about quarterback rotations. The Browns probably won’t play Deshaun Watson at all, but they have a strong rotation behind Watson with Jameis Winston, Dorian Thompson-Robinson and Tyler Huntley. The Packers don’t figure to play Jordan Love at all and behind him they have Sean Clifford, Michael Pratt and Jacob Eason. I’ll take the Browns. The situation is similar with the Cowboys and Rams. The Cowboys will give Cooper Rush and Trey Lance all the work, while the Rams go with Jimmy Garoppolo, Stetson Bennett and Dresser Winn with Matthew Stafford not playing. I’ll take the Cowboys.
NFL Preseason Week 1 Underdogs Parlay
Houston +1 at Pittsburgh
Denver +1.5 at Indianapolis
I know that everyone is talking about the Steelers quarterback battle, but Russell Wilson probably won’t play and Justin Fields may not play more than a quarter. Maybe it is Kyle Allen for a quarter or so and then it is John Rhys Plumlee. The Texans have a strong quarterback rotation behind C.J. Stroud in Davis Mills, Case Keenum and Tim Boyle. I’ll take the Texans plus the points. I’ll also take the Broncos plus the points against the Colts. Denver has a quarterback battle between Bo Nix, Jarrett Stidham and Zach Wilson, while the Colts know what they have in Anthony Richardson and Joe Flacco so it figures to be Sam Ehlinger, Kedon Slovis and maybe Jason Bean getting the playing time. I’ll take the Broncos plus the points.
NFL Preseason Week 1 Line Moves Parlay
Philadelphia Eagles -2 at Baltimore Ravens
Las Vegas Raiders -4 at Minnesota Vikings
The Ravens long winning streak in the preseason came to an end last year and the wise guys are all over the Eagles in this one. The Eagles have Kenny Pickett behind Jalen Hurts and Pickett should get a lot of work and then it is Tanner McKee and Will Grier. The Ravens figure to give Josh Johnson plenty of playing time along with Devin Leary and Emory Jones. The wise guys are also betting the Raiders who have a quarterback battle going on between Gardner Minshew and Aidan O’Connell. The Vikings have Sam Darnold as the starter, but rookie J.J. McCarthy is going to get a lot of playing time and Minnesota also has Nick Mullens and Jaren Hall.
