February 20, 2025The Allen Fieldhouse will be rocking Saturday afternoon when the No. 23 Kansas Jayhawks host the Oklahoma State Cowboys, looking to get back in the good graces of the Lawrence faithful after a painful road trip. Steve Lutz’s Cowboys ended a two-game losing streak on Wednesday night taking care of business in a one-sided romp of UCF. As for the Jayhawks, they return home from a two game stop in the Beehive State where Bill Self’s kids dropped a pair to Utah and BYU by the aggregate score of 165-124.
Kansas has dominated the recent rivalry with the Cowboys winning each of the last seven meetings (6-1 ATS) and defended its court each of the last six times OK-State invaded the Phog (5-1 ATS). They’ve played to three straight unders in in Lawrence with 137 points scored on average. Caesars Sportsbook will have the Jayhawks installed favorites in the mid-teens on the college basketball betting odds for this lone regular season skirmish with the total set in the mid-140s.

Oklahoma State Cowboys
The Cowboys halted a two-game losing streak in Gallagher-Iba Wednesday night outlasting the UCF Knights 104-95 to cover the CBB spread as short 2-point favorites. While the defense had all kinds of issues dealing with Keyshawn Hill and Darius Johnson, Oklahoma State made up for it offensively by shooting 47.3% from the floor and converting 28 of their 35 attempts from the charity stripe. They needed each and every one of those freebies too considering they sent UCF to the line a whopping 38 times—in their own gym!
Bryce Thompson had himself a game going for a season-high 25 points, but four other Cowpokes went for double-digits allowing for a balanced attack to be thrown at the Knights. Forcing turnovers is an area Ok-State excels in (#44), and they were at it again Wednesday night with the 20 forced turnovers going for 26 points the other way.
Kansas Jayhawks
I’ve witnessed some rough road trips for the Jayhawks in my day, but none as embarrassing as the team’s recent two-game trek through the state of Utah. After never holding a lead and failing to cover the 6.5-point spread in a 74-67 loss to Utah, KU spit the bit in Provo immediately after with BYU enforcing their will right from the opening tip. It was 8-0 before Kansas got on the board and 22-7 only seven minutes into the game. When the dust cleared on the 91-57 beat down, the Jayhawks lost back-to-back games for the first time this season with the 34-point defeat tying the biggest of the Bill Self era.
The defense played with no energy or resolve allowing BYU to rain down three after three. Kansas was outrebounded 43-33 and surrendered 32 points in the paint with a majority coming off offensive rebounds. The Cougars shot 51.5% from the floor and connected on 14-of-36 shots from beyond the arc. Hunter Dickinson led the team in scoring with a whopping 12 points.

Self cancelled everything on Wednesday to let the coaches and players decompress in hopes of getting everyone’s minds right for the conclusion of the regular season and postseason play. Even sitting 17-9 overall and just 8-7 in Big 12 play, current Bracketology forecasts have Kansas sitting on the five-line for the Big Dance. With five games remaining on the docket and two winnable games upcoming, the time is now for KU to right the ship and calm the Jayhawk faithful down. Even former players took to social media during and after the game against BYU to voice their displeasure with the team’s performance.
That being said, I still have zero faith in this team. I don’t believe a one day break will cure their ails. The roster construction is poor and the work ethic might be even worse. This is a team that’s covered once the last eight times it took to the hardwood, and it’s 0-3 versus the CBB odds the three times it’s been asked to lay double-digits at home in Big 12 play. Oklahoma State has been pesky on the road of late covering three of their last four, including some big numbers against Houston (+21.5) and Texas Tech (+18). So be it if the Jayhawks put forth a circle the wagons type effort—I’m betting against it!
