The last major of the year gets underway on Thursday at Royal Liverpool in England with Rory McIlroy listed as the betting favorite at BetRivers. McIlroy is listed with odds of +700 and is followed closely by World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler at golf betting odds of +750. No other golfers are listed at single-digit odds, as the closest is Jon Rahm at +1200. Rahm is looking to become the first player since Tiger Woods to win the Masters and the Open Championship in the same year. Top players who are looking to win their first major include Xander Schauffele, Tony Finau and Rickie Fowler. Cameron Smith is the defending champion and he will look to become the first player to go back-to-back since Padraig Harrington in 2007-2008. Let’s look at Open Championship picks.
Venue: Royal Liverpool (Hoylake) is a par 71 that measures 7,313 yards. This will be the 13th time that Royal Liverpool will host the Open, the last time being in 2014. The course will look much difference than it did in 2014, as there is a new par-3 17th hole. The 10th is now a par 4 that measures over 500 yards.
Last Year: Cameron Smith won at St. Andrews by shooting a final round 8-under 64. He beat Cameron Young by one shot. McIlroy finished in third, while Viktor Hovland and Tommy Fleetwood tied for fourth.

McIlroy, Rory +700
A golf betting favorite finally won last week when McIlroy birdied the last two holes to beat Robert McIntyre at the Genesis Scottish Open. While McIlroy did win last week to break a long drought of favorites winning, there is still no doubt that betting golf favorites is simply not profitable. Maybe McIlroy can win again this week, but I am not backing him as the favorite.
Value Picks
Scheffler, Scottie +750
Anytime I can get Scheffler and he is not the favorite I have to strongly consider it. He is the top golfer in the world and he is seemingly in contention to win every single week. If he ever gets hot with his putter, he may win one of these events by ten shots. I can’t overlook Scheffler when he is playing great and not listed as the favorite.
Koepka, Brooks +2200
When it comes to majors, you can’t afford to leave Koepka off the list. He has won five majors in his career and we know that he gets himself ready for big events. He has played well in Open Championships in the past with four top 10 finishes. He hits the ball a long way and he should put himself in good positions this week.
Tyrell Hatton +2500
There is no question that Hatton is playing some good golf and it could be this week where he takes a big step forward. He has six top 20 finishes in his last eight events and he is up to No. 15 in the latest World Golf Rankings. He has finished in the top 11 in three of his last six Opens.
Morikawa, Collin +2800
You may not realize that Morikawa has not won a tournament since November of 2021. He has gotten close lately, losing in a playoff to Rickie Fowler. Morikawa is fifth on the PGA Tour in par-5 scoring and he has been consistently improving his shots gained: tee-to-green. I’ll go with Morikawa at decent odds this week.
Tom Kim +5000
We almost hit Kim last week, but he couldn’t close the deal on Sunday. I said last week I was surprised the price on Kim was so high and I am saying it again this week. Kim is just 21 years old but he has already proven he can play and beat the best in the world. He got some good experience last week at Renaissance and I think he could contend again this week.
