October 31, 2023We haven’t seen Tiger Woods compete competitively on the PGA Tour in some time, but players will feel his presence this week at the World Wide Technology Championship. Breaking away from the only host the tournament has ever known because of its arrangement with LIV Golf, the Tour is headed to El Cardonal, a Woods-designed course in Cabo San Lucas for the third tournament south of the border this season. The first was this event 12 months ago won by Russell Henley, who matched the tournament scoring record set by Viktor Hovland the previous year. Tony Finau emerged victorious at the Mexico Open in late April. Those players are not among the 132 scheduled to peg it up starting Thursday leaving Ryder Cup standout Ludvig Aberg as the golf betting favorite.
The only player with shorter than 10/1 PGA golf odds, Aberg isn’t even the top-ranked golfer competing. Cameron Young hit the board as the second favorite on the golf betting lines and is slotted No. 16 in the OWGR. With a world ranking of 29, third favorite Sahith Theegala is the only other player ranked among the top 30 scheduled to peg it up. The World Wide Technology Championship will run from Nov. 2-5 with golf betting odds available at BetRivers sportsbook.

The Field
Unlike previous tournaments that saw some of the top players in the world compete, this edition lacks star power. Aberg emerged as the golf betting favorite with memories of his epic showing at the Ryder Cup still fresh. Aberg and Viktor Hovland helped the Europeans dispose of Team USA by taking out Scottie Scheffler and Brooks Koepka by the largest winning margin in an 18-hole match at the event. He finished the Cup with a 2-2-0 record
Aberg earned his first professional win a month before the Ryder Cup outdistancing the field at the DP World Tour’s Omega European Masters. A week after the Ryder Cup Aberg was part of a five-man playoff at the Sanderson Farms Championship finishing tied for second behind Luke List.
One player I have an eye on is Theegala, who broke through for his first Tour victory last month at the Fortinet Championship, one of his eight top 10s in 30 starts this season. He’s also recovered from a rough patch that saw hit miss the cut in three straight starts in July. In four starts since then he hasn’t finished outside the top 20.
Golf betting odds suggest a wide open field with a number of players going off between 20/1 and 30/1. These types of tournaments are ripe for someone further down the board to sneak in and claim victory. One of those players is Lucas Glover, who makes his FedExCup fall season debut after a scorching hot finish to the regular season. During July and August he had a six-tournament stretch where he placed among the top 6 five times, the last two of that run ended up in wins at the Wyndham Championship and the FedEx St. Jude Championship. He hasn’t competed since the TOUR Championship so inactivity could play a role.
With El Cardonal hosting a PGA Tour event for the first time there isn’t a history to lean on. However, one player who has thrived in tropical environments and who likes like a good fit for the layout is Akshay Bhatia. He was runner-up in Puerto Rico and placed among the top 5 at the Mexico Open earlier this year. He had a hiccup after his first Tour victory in July but has since rebounded with a T21 last time out at the ZOZO Championship. And it looks like the stars are aligning for his trip to Mexico.
The Course
Stretched to 7,452 yards at par 72, El Cardonal at Diamante is a new venue for everyone with this being the first PGA Tour event on the property. Opened in 2014 it’s the first course-design completed by Woods’ firm. The resort-style layout is wide open with no rough and humongous greens so we can expect scores to plummet. Big hitters could have an advantage reaching the landing spots but putting will come into play. Also expect swirling winds to be a factor as the main defense.
Prediction
Aberg is a rising star and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in contention on Sunday. However, one player with the game to overtake Abert and the course is Theegala, who recently experienced winning on the PGA Tour and is poised for many more during his career.
