June 6, 2023It is the week before the U.S. Open and that normally means we don’t get many top players showing up, but in this week’s RBC Canadian Open we do have Rory McIlroy, Tyrrell Hatton, Matt Fitzpatrick, Justin Rose, Sam Burns and Cameron Young in the field. McIlroy is listed as the +400 favorite at BetRivers. McIlroy was leading the Memorial last week but then collapsed on Sunday. It will be interesting to see who is focused for this week with the U.S. Open on tap next week. Canadians have not fared well in this event, as no Canadian has won this event since 1954. Corey Conners finished sixth last year. Rory McIlroy will be trying to win this event for the third straight time. The last player to win an event three straight times was Steve Stricker who won the John Deere Classic from 2009-2011. Let’s look at RBC Canadian Open picks.
Venue: Oakdale Golf and Country Club is a par 72 that measures 7,264 yards. It will be hosting the RBC Canadian Open for the first time and will become the 37th course to host the event.
Last Year: Rory McIlroy defended the title he won in 2019 after the event was cancelled in 2020 and 2021. McIlroy finished two shots in front of Tony Finau. Justin Thomas finished third, while Sam Burns and Justin Rose tied for fourth.

McIlroy, Rory +400
You should know by now that golf betting favorites lose almost every week. Last week it was Scottie Scheffler in this spot and although he rallied on Sunday, he still didn’t win. This week it is McIlroy who is favored and the odds are ridiculously low. Keep in mind that this RBC Canadian Open will be played on an entirely new course, so McIlroy won’t have the advantage of playing on the course where he won the last two. I know McIlroy played well last week, but I am not backing him at this low number.
Value Picks
Fitzpatrick, Matt +1100
This could be a good spot for Fitzpatrick before he defends his U.S. Open title next week. This course should suit him well as accuracy is a huge plus. Fitzpatrick has done well on these types of courses in the past. He is 9th on the PGA Tour in Strokes Gained Off the Tee and he is 8th in Tee to Green. I think he will contend for the win this week.
Burns, Sam +1400
I know that Burns can be up and down, but when he is good, he wins. He has won five times in his last 53 starts and that is almost a 10% winning percentage. He has played well on Poa Annua greens in the past and I think he will do well putting this week. This course should suit his game far better than some of the other longer courses.
Lowry, Shane +1600
One of the most accurate players off the tee is Lowy and there is no question that accuracy is going to be important at Oakdale. This course is tree-lined and I expect that the players who put it in the fairway will be the ones in contention on Sunday. I’ll take Lowy at odds of 16-1.
Theegala, Sahith +3300
This looks like a good spot for Theegala to finally get his first PGA Tour win. The field is not that strong and Theegala can shine on shorter courses. He is another player who does well on Poa Annua greens. He ranks 7th on the PGA Tour in Birdie Average and I expect scoring to be good this week. I’ll take a shot with Theegala.
Meronk, Adrian +5000
Meronk has not done much on the PGA Tour, but he has played well on the European Tour and it would not surprise me to see him in the mix this week. You might not even know that Meronk has moved into the Top 50 in the latest World Golf Rankings. He has played well this year and in a field that is a bit watered down, he can contend.
