September 27, 2023The United States is the defending Ryder Cup champion but the U.S. has had nothing but misery of late when the event is held in Europe. The U.S. won by 10 points at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin in 2021, but they have not won in Europe since 1993. The U.S. team has a lot of star power including World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, but they also have four rookies on the team. Europe has a strong team as well, led by Nos. 2-4 in the world ranking, Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm and Viktor Hovland. The Europe roster also includes Ludvig Aberg, who just turned pro in June. The Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Italy features multiple par 4’s that are drivable and some par 5 holes that are reachable in two. The United States has not won in Europe since the 1993 Ryder Cup at The Belfry in England. The player who has played in the most Ryder Cups is McIlroy who will be playing his seventh Ryder Cup. The captain for the USA team is Zach Johnson, while the Europe captain is Luke Donald. The United States is a very slight favorite in Ryder Cup odds at Caesars. I am coming off a good win, as I had Sahith Theegala at 18-1 odds in the Fortinet Championship. Let’s look at Ryder Cup picks.
Team Europe
Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Viktor Hovland, Tyrrell Hatton, Matt Fitzpatrick, Robert MacIntyre, Shane Lowry, Tommy Fleetwood, Justin Rose, Sepp Straka, Nicolai Hojgaard, Ludvig Aberg
Team USA
Scottie Scheffler, Wyndham Clark, Brian Harman, Patrick Cantlay, Max Homa, Xander Schauffele, Justin Thomas, Brooks Koepka, Jordan Spieth, Collin Morikawa, Sam Burns, Rickie Fowler
Venue: Marco Simone Golf & Country Club is a par 71 that measures 7,181 yards. It is located about 10 miles from the center of Rome. The course was originally built in 1989 by Jim Fazio and David Mezzacane and redesigned from 2018 through 2021 by European Golf Design in cooperation with Tom Fazio II.
Last Time: The United States team blitzed Europe two years ago, as they bolted to a 6-2 lead and never looked book. The final score ended up being 19-9 in favor of the Americans.

Ryder Cup Picks
The odds on the Ryder Cup are basically a pick. The U.S. is the better team on paper, but Europe will be playing at home. And don’t discount the advantage of playing at home. Since 1983, the home team is 14-5 in this competition. “I’ve felt this for a while now, but I think one of the biggest accomplishments in the game of golf right now is a team winning an away Ryder Cup,” McIlroy said to the media, “It hasn’t happened since 2012, and I think you’re going to see this pattern of teams are going to do everything they can to set themselves up for success.” If the U.S. is going to win the Ryder Cup they have to improve their play in foursomes. They are 2-12-2 in the last two Ryder Cups held in Europe.
When looking at this year’s Ryder Cup it is a tough call. I lean a little bit toward Europe because they are at home and I also think they are deeper than most of the media is giving them credit for. I think the four players who are not considered stars, Robert MacIntyre, Sepp Straka, Nicolai Hojgaard and Ludvig Aberg could be the difference for the European team.
I think McIlroy has a little value at +900 to have the most points and I have to give a strong look to Aberg at +1600 and I think McIntrye is worth a flyer at +6500.
