FedEx St. Jude Championship Matchup Picks
August 9, 2023MLB Same Game Parlay Picks, Odds & Predictions – Thursday, August 10
August 9, 2023The San Francisco 49ers were one of the few teams with double-digit win total odds that I backed to go over the number a season ago. The decision proved to be wise after Kyle Shanahan somehow managed to coach this team to 13 wins and the No. 2 seed in the NFC. And he did it with not one, not two, but three quarterbacks leading his offense’s charge. How’s that for getting the job done when the chips are down?! Unfortunately, the season came to a crashing thud once QB No. 3 Brock Purdy suffered an elbow injury in the NFC title game that prevented him from throwing the ball downfield. The Niners suffered an embarrassing 31-7 defeat to the Eagles and because of it will enter the 2023-24 NFL betting season with a major axe to grind. For the fourth straight season, the Niners are owners of a 10+ game win total at BetRivers Sportsbook and easier schedule strength than the one opposed last year. Even with questions remaining under center and the offensive line and secondary down some pertinent pieces, this roster is still one of the best and most talented in the league.
San Francisco 49ers: Where’s Shane Falco when you
Looking ahead to the 2023-24 season, the San Francisco 49ers and oddsmakers have high expectations. The team’s win total is set at 10.5 which makes San Fran one of just six teams that possess a double-digit win tally. The 49ers are aiming to build on their success from the previous season and make a deep playoff run. Led by head coach Kyle Shanahan, the offense boasts a talented roster of playmakers. However, the starting quarterback position remains uncertain, with questions surrounding the health of Brock Purdy, who impressed during his time as a starter. Despite the quarterback carousel, the 49ers showcased their dominance, finishing at the top of various team metrics, including DVOA and point differential. The addition of running back Christian McCaffrey elevated the offense, leading all running backs with 39 explosive plays following his arrival. On the defensive side of the ball, the 49ers will need to adjust to the loss of DC DeMeco Ryans, who left for a head coaching position in Houston. Veteran Steve Wilks will take over, bringing his expertise to an already talented stop unit. The addition of former Eagles defensive tackle Javon Hargrave further strengthens the defensive line and provides a boost to the pass rush with Nick Bosa likely to wreak even more havoc after tallying 34 sacks the last two seasons. Overall, the team showcased resilience despite significant injuries at the quarterback, defensive line, and running back positions, thanks to their supreme depth in those areas.

San Francisco 49ers Season Wins Total: 10.5
The number to beat initially hit the board 11 but has since been bet down a half-win to 10.5 with extremely heavy -150 juice supplanted on the over. Some spots still sit 11 or even 11.5 with attractive plus-money returns attached to the high side of the impost. Either way, expectations are high by the Bay. Sharp Football Analysis has San Francisco running up against the fifth easiest schedule strength after opposing the No. 13 ranked schedule a season ago. However, it must be noted that they own the absolute worst cumulative rest advantage of all 32 teams with it set to face an absurd four teams coming off a bye. They’ll take three of them on over a five week stretch! While the NFC West looks to be a two-horse race, battling the AFC North and NFC East along with standalones versus the Vikings and Jaguars will make them earn it.
There are several reasons to believe that the San Francisco 49ers can surpass their win total of 10.5 games. First and foremost, the team’s defense was exceptional last season, finishing at the top of the league in various metrics. Despite some changes, the 49ers have the talent and coaching to maintain a high level of play on that side of the ball. Offensively, the 49ers have a strong supporting cast of skill players, including George Kittle, Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, as well as cheat code Christian McCaffrey. Shanahan’s offensive scheme has proven effective, even with different quarterbacks at the helm. If the team can solidify the quarterback position and continue to generate explosive plays, they’ll have an excellent chance to go over in back-to-back seasons.
Case for the Under
On the other hand, there are factors that could contribute to the 49ers falling short. The quarterback position remains a question mark, with uncertainties surrounding the health and performance of Brock Purdy. While Mr. Irrelevant showed promise in his rookie campaign, there are concerns about his turnover-worthy play rate and the quality of pass defenses faced during the team’s late-season run. The departure of right tackle Mike McGlinchey also leaves some cause for concern along the offensive line. His absence and reliance upon a lesser player potentially weakens an already shaky unit. The 49ers will also need to adapt to a new defensive coordinator and fill the void left by the departure of cornerback Emmanuel Moseley and safety Jimmie Ward.

San Francisco 49ers Season Win Total Analysis
Talent often wins out in this league and I’m still of the belief the 49ers are one of if not the most talented teams in the NFC as well as the entire league. Their cumulative success or lack thereof will ultimately fall upon the shoulders of whichever quarterback takes the gig and runs with it as loaded the roster looks to be on both sides of the ball. NFL schedule makers look to be of the same belief with the Niners set to exhibit their skills under the primetime lights five times with each and every one of those matchups likely to be a banger. Should it avoid losing the season opener in the Steel City – unlike last year in Chicago, an unblemished record heading into the Week 9 bye is certainly within the team’s range of outcomes. I plan on owning shares of the Niners winning the NFC West and NFC but will take a wait and see approach with the belief juicier offerings will be available provided the tricky schedule trips them up early on. Same goes for the win total with BetRivers demanding I eat way too much chalk to get involved. I’ll sit back and look to play the readjusted in-season win total instead in hopes of landing a better number at a more affordable cost.
