It was clearly a mistake to take the Under in the Frisco Bowl. The Memphis Tigers and West Virginia Mountaineers combined for just seven points in the first quarter on Tuesday night, but they exploded in the next 15 minutes. These two teams went back and forth, combining for 38 points, and pretty much dooming the Under in the process. That high-octane frame was a big reason why the game went well Over the total of 58.5, making my Under play a big loser.
That was a shame since I was on the right side with Memphis. The Tigers were short favorites by the college football betting odds, and they never trailed in a 42-37 win. These two teams combined for over 1,000 yards, as Seth Henigan and Garrett Greene both had strong performances for their respective teams.

Seth Henigan is one of the most prolific passers in college football history. Henigan ranks 13th in terms of career passing yards, throwing for 14,266 yards in four years as the starter at Memphis. The senior led the Tigers to a strong 11-2 season, and they would have made it to the AAC Championship Game if they would have won shootouts against either Navy or UTSA.
Hudson Clement had an excellent performance in the loss for West Virginia. Clement ended with 11 receptions for 166 yards and two touchdowns, being responsible for much of Garrett Greene’s production in the loss. Greene completed 29 of 40 passes for 328 yards with two touchdowns and an interception, and he also ran the ball seven times for 95 yards and a score.
It will be interesting to see what West Virginia does next year with Rich Rodriguez back in Morgantown. Much of the roster is expected to change as Rodriguez installs the offense that made the Mountaineers a force to be reckoned with in the mid-2000s, and there will be a new quarterback as Greene is departing. North Carolina bringing back Mack Brown didn’t work out, but West Virginia is hoping that this will be more of a move like when Greg Schiano came back to Rutgers or Bill Snyder came back to Kansas State.

The Memphis Tigers have secured consecutive 10-win seasons for the first time in school history under Ryan Silverfield. Some were calling for Silverfield to be fired after three middling seasons to start his career, but the school stuck to its guns and has been rewarded. Silverfield is 3-0 in bowl games and is looking to go to 4-0 when his Tigers take on the West Virginia Mountaineers in the Scooter’s Coffee Frisco Bowl. This game will be played at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas on Tuesday, December 17, 2024.

While Memphis has been rewarded for sticking with Ryan Silverfield, the West Virginia Mountaineers were forced to finally cut bait with Neal Brown. Many thought that Brown would be fired after the conclusion of the 2022 season as WVU was 22-25 through four seasons, but the administration stuck with him. We saw Brown lead the Mountaineers to a 9-4 record in 2023, and it looked like he might finally be turning the program around, but he was relieved of his duties after a 6-6 campaign this season. Chad Scott will coach the bowl game, but fans and alumni alike are excited over reports that Rich Rodriguez will be returning to Morgantown.
The biggest part of handicapping college football bowl games nowadays is weighing the importance of opt-outs and players that are entering the transfer portal. West Virginia has quite a few notable players that may not be taking part in this game, but the most important player is linebacker Josiah Trotter. The freshman linebacker from Philadelphia had a fantastic season, finishing second in total tackles, and he is currently visiting other Power Four programs. Keep an eye on the status of top pass rusher T.J. Jackson, starting cornerback Garnett Hollis Jr., and Sean Martin as they are all considered potential opt-outs. Any absences would be big as this defense is not good, allowing 31.1 PPG this season.
West Virginia’s offense is led by its ground game. The Mountaineers have three players that have run for over 650 yards this season, including quarterback Garrett Greene. The fifth-year senior completed 58.2% of his passes for 1,972 yards (7.2 YPA) this season with 13 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, and he also ran for 656 yards (5.2 YPC) and five touchdowns. Jahiem White is the top running back, rushing for 817 yards and seven touchdowns while averaging 5.8 YPC. C.J. Donaldson Jr. has run for 651 yards and nine touchdowns as more of a bruiser back.
Memphis doesn’t have as many problems, although the Tigers might be without standout running back Mario Anderson Jr. as he could opt out. Anderson has been sensational this year, running for 1,292 yards and 17 touchdowns while averaging 5.9 YPC. Additionally, Anderson has caught the second-most passes on Memphis with 46 receptions for 290 yards and two touchdowns.
Senior Seth Henigan has been remarkably consistent over his four-year career. Henigan threw for over 3,000 yards with more than 20 touchdown passes for the fourth straight season and will go down as one of the most productive quarterbacks in program history. He wasn’t as much of a big play threat this year, averaging just 7.1 YPA, but Henigan completed 64.5% of his passes for 3,208 yards with 23 touchdowns and six interceptions.
Roc Taylor is the Tigers’ top receiver with 61 receptions for 834 yards and two touchdowns on the year. Demeer Blankumsee was a solid second option in his second season, although he wasn’t as explosive with 41 receptions for 557 yards and five scores, while Koby Drake corralled 39 passes for 484 yards and a touchdown.
The Tigers have had some issues with defense in the past, but they are allowing just 22.8 PPG this season. Junior Chandler Martin has been one of the standouts of the unit, leading Memphis with 94 tackles and seven sacks. Senior Davion Ross has been very active in the secondary and leads the team with 11 passes defensed and three interceptions.
