Maryland Terrapins vs. Purdue Boilermakers
Date and Time: Sunday, January 22, 2023 at 1 PM EST
Location: Mackey Arena, West Lafayette, Indiana
TV Coverage: FS1
The Purdue Boilermakers continue to stockpile wins and cover point spreads. They did so once again last time out after going into Minnesota and skunking the Golden Gophers 61-39 as 13-point road favorites. Even more impressive about the 22 point beat down is that it occurred immediately after going into East Lansing and scoring the 64-63 win over Sparty. There was no letdown! I’m thinking linemakers throw an inflated number on the board for this first of two regular season meetings with a Terps team that stands 1-4 SU and ATS on the true road with the lone win and cover coming against what’s been a wretched Louisville team. They’ve gone winless in Big Ten play as visitors falling to Wisconsin, Michigan, Rutgers, and Iowa by an average of 17 points per game.
However, Maryland has some size down low in Donta Scott and Julian Reese to contend with Zach Edey. If a yeoman’s job is done of limiting the big man close to the rack, Purdue will be hard pressed to continue its hot shooting from the perimeter with the Terrapins marching out one of the better 3-point defenses (No. 53) in the country. That could and should prevent the home team from toppling what’s destined to be an inflated number.

Memphis Tigers vs. Cincinnati Bearcats
Date and Time: Sunday, January 22, 2023 at 1 PM EST
Location: Fifth-Third Arena, Cincinnati, Ohio
TV Coverage: ESPN2
This AAC rivalry between Memphis and Cincinnati had played to low scoring defensive slobber knockers for as long as I can remember. That was up until the last four meetings with the teams putting on offensive clinics that’ve been must-see TV. Last year’s pair of skirmishes saw an average of 161 points dent the scoreboard with the totals going off the board at 143 on average. The two meetings before that saw an average of 165 points hit the board! In other words, the defenses have recently taken a back seat to allow for the offenses to do their things. That should have Kendric Davis and Landers Nolley II grinning from ear-to-ear!
The Tigers have cashed over tickets at a 12-7 clip by way of conceding a healthy 72.0 points per game (No. 253). Penny Hardaway’s kids have played to the over in five of six played true road games, and I’m expecting more of the same in the first of two meetings with the Bearcats. Cincinnati’s feeling it offensively right now having gone for 80+ points in two of its last three games. While Memphis is fully adept at causing turnovers (No. 34), the Bearcats do a tremendous job keeping possession of the basketball (No. 20). With miscues likely not going to force copious amounts of empty possessions and the visiting Tigers pushing the pace, I foresee a good amount of points hitting the board to keep the rivalry’s over streak intact.
BET THE OVER
Washington State Cougars vs. Colorado Buffaloes
Date and Time: Sunday, January 22, 2023 at 6 PM EST
Location: CU Events Center, Boulder, Colorado
TV Coverage: ESPNU
I’m expecting a locked in Buffaloes squad to take to their home hardwood on Sunday night when they welcome a frisky Wazzou outfit into the thin air of the CU Events Center. Colorado just dropped a third straight game on Thursday night after falling 75-72 to a Washington outfit it was favored to beat by 9-points. That certainly won’t sit well with Tad Boyle who has made it a point for his kids to rise up whenever taking the hardwood in front of the hometown faithful. The loss to the Huskies was the second in Pac-12 play after coughing one up to Arizona State way back in early December.
Colorado’s ability to win this game will ultimately come down to the defense which failed to show against U-Dub in allowing the Huskies to drain 54 percent of their shots from the field which included a 9 of 20 showing from downtown. Washington entered the game one of the worst 3-point shooting teams in the country (No. 275)! I think it was an anomaly. Jabe Mullins and his Coogs teammates can shoot the 3-ball (No. 66) but has no inside game to speak of whatsoever (No. 229). With Tristan Da Silva and the Buffs excelled 2-point defense (No. 53) likely to lock down the paint, this could go sideways real quick if Wazzou isn’t connecting from deep. With CU pushing the pace and looking to snap a three-game losing streak on its home floor where it’s been dominant more times than not, look for CU to close the week with the get-right win and cover it so sorely needs.
