February 19, 2025Suns at Spurs Same Game Parlay Recap
The chances of the San Antonio Spurs making the playoffs before the loss of Victor Wembanyama were slim. Prior to their matchup with the Phoenix Suns on Thursday, Feb. 20 the Spurs announced their All-Star center would miss the remainder of the season due to a blood clot in his shoulder. So, playing without their leading scorer and rebounder, the Spurs entered the matchup as a 2.5-point dog on the closing NBA betting line at Proline+ but got 26 points from De’Aaron Fox to win 120-109. And to clarify Fox has a higher overall scoring average but in his six games with the Spurs his average is lower than Wembanyama’s.
Fox got plenty of help in what was a team effort as six other players scored in double figures. However it was Fox who took over the game scoring 11 straight points during one stretch late in the fourth quarter. Reserves Keldon Johnson and Julian Champagnie each scored 15 points and combined to make 11 of 16 field goals. Chris Paul scored 13 points and dished out 10 assists. The late outburst by Fox wasn’t enough to get the teams to the total with UNDER 238 cashing.

It was another disappointing outing for the Suns in a season full of them. Those who thought the All-Star break would give them a chance to reboot were wrong. One of the most disappointing teams in the NBA, the Suns had lost three straight and six of seven heading into the break. And their big three of Kevin Durant, Devin Booker and Bradley Beal all suited up. KD scored 22 points and Beal had 19, but Booker was just 4 of 14 from the field and committed four of the teams’ 18 turnovers.
In an attempt to expand their fan base in the state of Texas the game took place at the Moody Center on the campus of the University of Texas in Austin and attracted a crowd of over 16,000. The Spurs also closed within a game of Phoenix for 11th in the Western Conference standings and are three games behind Sacramento and Golden State for ninth place.

It hasn’t quite been the season the Phoenix Suns were expecting and there’s nothing to suggest they can turn things around in the second half. Among the favorites on the NBA futures odds at Caesars sportsbook at the beginning of the campaign, the Suns find themselves 11th in the Western Conference when they resume play post All-Star break with a game against the San Antonio Spurs. Both teams have struggled recently as they fight for postseason positioning. The Suns lost three straight and six of seven before the break while the Spurs are just 3-7 in their last 10 outings. Still, both clubs are well within reach of a play-in spot making this is an important matchup.

With a bloated payroll of underachieving stars the Suns have some roster decisions to make. They were linked to Jimmy Butler prior to the deadline but failed to swing a deal. The club is also reportedly interested in moving on from Kevin Durant. These are signs that point to a level of dysfunction within the organization and it has manifested on the court. Just a few weeks ago the Suns were on a little roll winning nine of 12 games and climbing the West standings.
There’s always a chance the Suns can turn things around and that starts with better health. In their 119-111 loss to Houston prior to the break the Suns played without Devin Booker and Bradley Beal, their second and third leading scorers. Between them the big three have missed 37 games and have rarely been on the court together at the same time. There’s a good chance Booker, Beal and Grayson Allen return to the floor after an extended break.
Overall the Suns are 26-28 and just 1.5 games behind Golden State and Sacramento for the last two play-in positions. And the Suns have had success against teams with a losing record going 15-9. The Suns aren’t ready to blow up the team just yet and they’re lucky they are still in the thick of the postseason race even though they are just 1-6 SU and 2-5 against the NBA betting line in their last seven. Phoenix held Victor Wembanyama to 15 points and got 29 from Booker beating San Antonio and getting the cash in a 104-93 win back in December.
While the expectations weren’t as high for the Spurs they’ve also had difficulties recently impacting their postseason aspirations. They made a significant move at the deadline acquiring De’Aaron Fox, who was leading Sacramento in scoring, to complement Wembanyama giving the Spurs are strong 1-2 punch. There’s has been an uptick in offensive production since Fox arrived and as the players bond they should be a stronger group.
In his first game with the Spurs Fox hit 11 of 22 field goals for 24 points with 13 assists. Fox also scored 30 points in last week’s 131-121 win over Washington. His two highest scoring games resulted in San Antonio victories while they dropped the other three. We should also note that all five games were part of the Spurs’ longest road trip of the season and it’s typically harder to win away games in the NBA.
Though he’s an imposing threat averaging 24.4 points and 11.0 rebounds, Wembanyama hasn’t consistently shown the ability to take over games like Stephen Curry or LeBron James can. And that’s why the Spurs need to surround him with quality players. Getting Fox is a start but I think the Spurs need more. If Phoenix has its roster intact they can be nearly unbeatable. The down time might help the Suns more than any team, and getting 2.5-points is a plus.
