February 3, 2022Are you ready to bet Super Bowl LVI between the Cincinnati Bengals and Los Angeles Rams? What you might not know is that there are some Super Bowl betting strategies that have proven successful through the years. Betting the Super Bowl is not quite like betting the regular season, as there are specific things to keep in mind, including line movement. What Super Bowl betting strategies should you follow for this year’s game? What things do you need to keep in mind when betting on the Super Bowl?
Super Bowl LVI – Cincinnati Bengals vs. Los Angeles Rams
Sunday, February 13 – SoFi Stadium – Inglewood, California – 6:30 pm ET (NBC)
Cincinnati Bengals +4
Los Angeles Rams -4
Total 48.5
Early Line Movement
You may not be aware that early line movement on the Super Bowl has historically been right. The early number set by oddsmakers is usually bet into by wise guys and in 10 of the last 13 Super Bowls the early line movement has predicted the winner correctly. The Super Bowl LVI line opened at 3.5 or 4 and the number has moved toward the Rams, as the line is now at 4 or 4.5. The total has moved down, as it opened at 50 or 50.5 and it has been bet down to 48.5. If you want to follow the line movement for Super Bowl LVI then you should bet the Rams and the game to go under the total.
Super Bowl Betting Favorites
You probably are wondering if the favorite or the under has been the way to go against the Super Bowl pointspread. The answer is that the favorite is the way go, but not by a lot. In the previous 55 Super Bowls the favorite has gone 29-23 ATS with two pushes and there was one Super Bowl listed as a pick. The favorite in the game is 38-16 SU with one game listed as a pick. It should be noted, however, that underdogs have covered the spread in 13 of the last 19 Super Bowls with one game listed as a pick.
Team That Scores First
If you want to make a live Super Bowl bet then you may want to bet on the team that scores first to win the game. Seven of the last nine Super Bowl winners have been the team that scored first. That trend holds up over time, as almost two thirds of Super Bowl winning teams were the teams that scored first. If you want to bet a Super Bowl prop you could take the prop on the team to score first also wins the game. You can get +143 on the Rams to score first and win the game and you can get +300 on the Bengals to score first and win the game.
First Quarter Under the Total
One of the best bets in every Super Bowl has been to bet the first quarter under the total. Not only can you bet the first quarter to go under but you can also bet team totals and other first quarter numbers to go under. In the last 13 Super Bowls there has been a total of 89 points scored in the first quarter. That translates into just 6.8 points per first quarter. It usually takes teams a little bit of time to figure each other out and teams tend to start out tentatively and that means very little scoring in the first quarter.
Betting Against the Public
One of the best NFL betting strategies is to bet against the public. It should be noted, however, that this strategy works better in the regular season than it does in the playoffs simply because there are more games. Oftentimes in the NFL playoffs you won’t see the public falling in love with one side or the other. You can still look at the public betting percentages for the Super Bowl, but you may not find a public consensus on the game. There is an interesting dynamic happening with Super Bowl LVI betting. Remember what we said about the early line movement going toward the Rams? The public is actually taking the Bengals in Super Bowl LVI so that means the average bettor likes the Bengals but the wise guys like the Rams. If that holds true leading up to Super Bowl LVI on February 13 you would be best served by betting the Rams.
