April 2, 2024The PGA Tour heads to Texas for this week’s Texas Children’s Houston Open and it is a top-heavy field, led by World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler who is listed as the favorite with odds of +275 at Caesars. World No. 4 Wyndham Clark is second in the betting odds at +1200. It is then a jump in the odds to Sahith Theegala and Will Zalatoris at +2000. Favorites in golf betting have been a losing proposition this year except for Scheffler who has won his last two events as the betting favorite. Longshots winning on the PGA Tour have been common this season and last week it was a huge longshot winning with Peter Malnati winning at odds of 250-1. Let’s look at Texas Children’s Houston Open odds and picks.

Favorite
Scottie Scheffler +275
If you read this column on a regular basis, you know that golf betting favorites don’t do well at all except for Scheffler. He has been the one exception to the rule of not taking favorites to win golf tournaments. We haven’t seen a favorite this low in terms of golf betting odds in a long time and he is starting to get into the range of Tiger Woods in terms of a betting favorite. The field this week is very top heavy, as there are simply not a lot of other top ranked players in the field other than Clark, Zalatoris and Finau. Normally I automatically say I won’t take the golf betting favorite, but I at least have to consider taking Scheffler this week.
Golf Picks
Wyndham Clark +1200
One of the golfers who I think can win on a regular basis other than Scheffler is Clark. I think he is just starting to figure out how good he can be. He is playing as well as anyone other than Scheffler and we get far better odds on Clark. I think he is worth at shot at 12-1.
Sahith Theegala +2000
I think you have to give Theegala a decent chance, as he plays well on tough courses. He has played well in the past at Torrey Pines, Rivera, Bay Hill, etc. He comes in playing well and ranks highly in approach, off the tee, and putting. Theegala will be playing at home and he will definitely be comfortable.
Keith Mitchell +4500
I would have kicked myself had Mitchell won last week because I didn’t take him. He held a two-shot lead on Sunday and collapsed. He has not won in more than five years on the PGA Tour, but we have seen players who haven’t won in a while do well, as Malnati won last week. Mitchell is long off the tee and I think he contends this week.
Kurt Kitayama +5500
An interesting longshot is Kitayama who ranks in the top 20 in approach and putting. He has played well in the past on tough courses that are long. He won at Bay Hill and he finished 6th in the PGA at Oak Hill. He comes in playing pretty well and I think he definitely matches up with anyone other than Scheffler.
Taylor Moore +5500
It was just about a year ago when Moore won the Valspar at a big price. He comes in playing well, as he was 13th last week and he had a good finish at THE PLAYERS. He is long off the tee and he can get hot with the putter. He is not without a chance and we get 55-1.
