April 21, 2022A women’s strawweight battle between powerful Brazilians headlines UFC Fight Night: Lemos vs. Andrade on Saturday, April 23 from the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. A total of 13 fights are scheduled, and while the card doesn’t include the biggest names in the promotion, the main event should be explosive with two attacking fighters who don’t like judges going at it. Bet on UFC online at Sugarhouse sportsbook with odds for every fight on the ticket. Saturday’s prelims start at 6 p.m. ET with the main card set to take over the octagon at 9 p.m. ET. All fights will air on ESPN+.
We don’t often see a non title women’s fight headline a UFC betting ticket, but the duel between Amanda Lemos (11-1-1) and Jessica Andrade (22-9) is no ordinary fight. Even though she lost three of her previous five fights, Andrade is the favorite at UFC betting sites and there’s a reason for that. She held the belt for a minute with a second round stop of Rose Namajunas in 2019. A little over three months later she was defeated by Zhang Weili and following a decision loss to Namajunas in the rematch, Andrade moved up a class where she immediately established herself as a title contender.
Taking on some of the best in the 125 class, Andrade went 2-1 beating current No. 2 title contender Kaitlyn Chookagian and No. 11 Cynthia Calvillo with first round KOs. Her only loss came in the middle of those two bouts to current division champion Valentina Shevchenko. Andrade decided to move back down to make another run at a title, and the experience against some of the top pound-for-pound female fighters should only make her better.
The UFC odds for this fight surprised me a bit and I’ll tell you why in a moment. Currently the No. 10 strawweight contender Lemos looks to build off a strong 2021. She went 3-0 last year extending her winning streak to five. Her only loss inside the Octagon came in her debut when she was finished by Leslie Smith. Last December Lemos edged Angela Hill on the scorecards vaulting into the top-10. However, she needs a signature win to establish herself as a legitimate threat in the class.
Both have shown to be the aggressor in their bouts, which should make for some intense rounds. That’s just one similarity between the two. They are also powerful punchers and striking specialists. Andrade is listed as the -205 favorite though she’s only 2-3 in her last five fights. But those setbacks came against some of the best in the promotion. And she’s hungry to win back the title. Lemos just hasn’t faced quality opponents like Andrade, which is why despite her glossy record she’s +161 on the UFC betting line. Four years younger and stronger on the mat gives Andrade the advantage and has us backing her at Sugarhouse.
UFC Prediction: Jessica Andrade -205 / (T)KO
There were some late changes to the fight card that UFC bettors should note. The original co-main event lost one of its participants when Tanner Boser was removed due to injury. Unbeaten Alexandr Romanov (15-0) will now tussle with UFC veteran Chase Sherman (15-9) in a heavyweight scrap. Also, Louis Cosce was removed from his welterweight bout with Preston Parsons (9-3) giving undefeated UFC newcomer Evan Elder a chance to show Dana White what he can do.
Moving into the co-main event slot is a men’s lightweight battle between Clay Guida (37-18) and Claudio Puelles (12-2). Just by looking at their records you can tell the fighters are at different stages of their careers, though the opening UFC odds have them both at -115. At 40 years old Guida shows no signs of slowing down. He fought three times last year going 2-1 with a controversial split decision loss to Mark O. Madsen. Puelles is undefeated since returning to the Octagon after nearly two years. He had a submission of Chris Gruetzemacher in his most recent fight a few months after handing Jordan Leavitt his first, and so far only, defeat. The younger fighter not only has 14 years on his opponent, he also has a considerable height and reach advantage. Stay upright and Puelles continues moving up the ranks.
UFC Prediction: Claudio Puelles -115 / Decision
