March 9, 2023BetMGM Faces Fenway Ad Standard Challenges
March 14, 2023Little can top what took place last week with two championship belts up for grabs. But some hungry fighters are set to enter the octagon on Saturday to brawl at UFC Fight Night: Yan vs. Davalishvili. The massive main event features a pair of ranked bantamweight contenders when former champ Petr Yan takes on Merab Dvalishvili with the winner a step closer to a date with current belt holder Aljamin Sterling.
The co-main event is a heavyweight tussle between UFC betting favorite Alexandr Romanov and Alexander Volkov. Romanov isn’t used to losing so expect the fiery Moldovian to come out swinging after suffering the first setback in his 17-fight pro career last time out. Another intriguing bout on the main card is a rescheduled affair between lightheavyweights Ryan Spann and Nikita Krylov, who were originally slated to headline an event last month. The stakes remain the same with Krylov positioned as a -175 favorite on the UFC betting line.

Yan (16-4) looks to get back in contention for the belt he previously held twice. Despite losing his last two fights, Yan is still the No. 2 ranked contender because he lost the strap to Sterling by split decision in a unification bout at UFC 273. He also was a split decision loser last time out in a highly controversial decision with many feeling Yan was robbed of a victory. Either way it was his third setback in four fights. Yan TKO’d Jose Aldo at UFC 251 to win the vacant bantamweight title and in his first title defense he was DQd for an illegal knee against Sterling. His only win in the last four fights was a unanimous decision over Cory Sandhagen for the vacant title after Sterling was laid out due to injury.
Despite his current slump Yan is one of the most well rounded fighters in the division and he really wasn’t beaten by Sterling or O’Malley which is why his UFC odds are -240. The No. 3 ranked contender in the division, Dvalishvili is riding an eight fight winning streak simply wearing down opponents in that span. It’s been a long ride to get a shot at the belt after dropping his first two fights in the promotion. Seven of his wins during the streak were unanimous decisions with Dvalishvili an experienced wrestler who’s able to get his opponents to the ground. Yan doesn’t go down easily and if he stays off the mat I can see him emerging victorious.
UFC Prediction: Petr Yan -240 / Decision
The winner of this heavyweight tussle takes another step toward a potential title fight. With 45 professional fights on his resume, Volkov (35-10) clearly has the edge in experience. And he also has a big height advantage towering over his opponent. It doesn’t appear as though he’s ready to slow down either climbing to No. 6 in the rankings following arguably the best fight of his career. Volkov earned a first round stoppage of Jairzinho Rozenstruik last June after dropping two of his previous three matches.
Romanov (16-1) is coming off his first professional defeat dropping a majority decision to Marcin Tybura at UFC 278. He had been dominant before that with nine of his wins by submission. This bout is a clash of styles with Romanov’s relentless approach. However, at 6-7 Volkov has the ability to keep his opponents on the outside and he’s fine with letting the judges decide. At +124 on the UFC betting line there is plenty of value backing Volkov.
UFC Prediction: Alexander Volkov +124 / (T)KO
