NHL Picks – Friday ESPN+ Doubleheader Has Playoff Implications!
March 29, 2023Final Four Odds and Picks
March 29, 2023The Valero Texas Open has an unfortunate spot on the PGA Tour schedule, as it takes place the week before The Masters. What that means for this event in San Antonio is one of the weaker fields of the year. All of the top players are bypassing this event to get ready for next week so it is a hodgepodge in terms of who to bet on this week with Tyrrell Hatton listed as the golf betting favorite at BetRivers. This could also be a week where a little bit of caution is advised with the matchups. I went 7-5 with the matchups at the WGC Dell Technologies Championship last week. Let’s look at Valero Texas Open matchup picks.
Defending Champion: J.J. Spaun
Tournament Notes: This could be a good week for a player to breakthrough with this first PGA Tour victory. Scoring at TPC San Antonio is not necessarily easy, so don’t expect a shootout this week. Spaun won last year by shooting 13-under par and it seems unlikely that we will see a score that low considering wind is in the forecast for Thursday and Friday.

Rickie Fowler +150 vs. Hatton, Tyrrell
I don’t take that many underdogs in golf betting, but I am really surprised that Hatton is such a big favorite over Rickie Fowler. We don’t even know if Hatton is completely healthy, as he suffered an injury in match play last week. Fowler has been playing well lately with six top 20 finishes and he has two finishes in the Top 17 in this tournament. I think Hatton is totally overvalued, so I will take the plus price on Fowler.
Putnam, Andrew -152 vs. Hojgaard, Nicolai
Putnam has solid numbers this season, as he is ranked in the Top 40 in fairways hit, GIR and Strokes Gained: Putting and adjusted scoring. He finished in a tie for 8th in this event in 2018. Hojgaard played well at Corales, but he faces better competition this week. I’ll take Putnam in this matchup.
Griffin, Ben -134 vs. Wallace, Matt
One of the things I have done with success over the years is going against the previous week’s winner. Wallace won at Corales last week and he is definitely playing well, but I am going against him this week. It is really hard to avoid a letdown after a big win. I took Griffin as one of my plays in the picks article and I will take him in this matchup against Wallace.
Davis, Cameron -142 vs. Pendrith, Taylor
Davis has rebounded from some struggles to finish in a tie for 6th at TPC Sawgrass and last week he won two of his three matches in the match play event. He ranks tied for 17th in par-5 scoring and he can have success this week. I’ll lay the price and take Davis in this matchup.
Schenk, Adam -110 vs. Ryder, Sam
Schenk didn’t play last week after finishing in second at Copperhead. He finished in a tie for 7th in this event in 2019. I expect the good form for Schenk to continue, so I will take him in this matchup against Ryder.
