April 2, 2024Final Four Picks
April 2, 2024The last event before the Masters next week is this week’s Valero Texas Open where World No. 2 Rory McIlroy is listed as the favorite. It is an unusually strong field in advance of the Masters with a number of players using this week as a prep for next week’s major. McIlroy is the favorite at odds of +800 at Caesars with Ludvig Aberg the second choice at +900. Jordan Spieth and Hideki Matsuyama are co-third choices at +1800, while Max Homa is next at +2000. Longshots winning on the PGA Tour have been common this season and last week it was another big payday with Stephan Jaegar winning at odds of 50-1. Let’s look at Valero Texas Open odds and picks.

Favorite
Rory McIlroy +800
Another golf betting favorite bit the dust last week, as Scheffler didn’t come through. I said a week ago that Scheffler was the only player you might be able to trust but I was still a bit leery just because golf betting favorites simply don’t win often enough to be profitable. This week it is McIlroy in the role of favorite. He can definitely win, but he doesn’t win as often as Scheffler and at this price I am not taking him.
Golf Picks
Ludvig Aberg +900
It seems everyone likes Aberg to win this week and that is the only reason I am somewhat leery of taking him. He still makes sense though, as he is playing really well and on some tough courses. He was 9th at Torrey Pines, 2nd at Pebble and 8th at TPC Sawgrass. He knows this area well having played golf at Texas Tech. I’ll put him on the list this week.
Billy Horschel +3500
If Horschel wants to play the Masters next week, then he has to win this event. He is definitely capable of winning, especially when he is motivated. He also comes in playing well with a 9th at PGA National and a 7th last week at Memorial Park. Four of his seven PGA Tour wins have come on Bermudagrass greens. I think the number is way too high on him this week and we get a lot of value.
Tom Kim +5500
I never thought we would see Kim listed at odds this high except perhaps in a major. Kim had to withdraw at THE PLAYERS to do illness. He has played well on tough courses in the past and TPC San Antonio should be to his liking. I think he is worth a shot at big odds this week.
Ryan Moore +10000
Why not Moore at big odds this week? He can hit the ball straight and find ways to score on a tough course. He plays better once the weather warms up and he has played well on this course in the past with a number of top 20 finishes.
Davis Riley +10000
Riley won on this course in 2020 on the Korn Ferry Tour so he will be very comfortable. He has played well in this area in the past and he may have turned the corner to better play last week when he was 14th at Houston. I’ll take a flyer on him this week.
