In an important Western Conference tilt on Wednesday, January 15, the Golden State Warriors stopped a two-game losing streak and finished off a four-game road trip with a 116-115 upset win over the Minnesota Timberwolves. With the Warriors struggling and ending a long trip our money was on the home team. The Wolves had a little momentum and were starting to resemble the team that reached last season’s Western Conference Final with four wins in five games coming in. And the Dubs were minus second leading scorer Jonathan Kuminga and Draymond Green leading us to back the Wolves on the NBA betting line.
It was a nightmare start for the hosts, though, who didn’t score their first bucket until more than four minutes had elapsed in the first quarter. The Wolves managed just 12 points in the frame and the Warriors took advantage building a 34-12 lead after 12 minutes. This is the NBA and we often see teams come back in big fashion. Minnesota rallied from a 24-point deficit to tie the game at 108 with just over a minute remaining in the fourth quarter, but they couldn’t get over the hump and never led in the contest.

Strong three-point shooting allowed the teams to go over the closing total of 217 making the NBA same game parlay a bust. Led by Stephen Curry, who connected on 7 of 12 triples, the Warriors made half of their 36 three-point attempts. Curry led all scorers and added eight assists while playing more than 37 minutes. The depleted roster got a boost from Andrew Wiggins scoring 24 points while Buddy Hield came off the bench to score 18 points.
Despite missing their first eight shots the Wolves finished a respectable 46 percent making 17 of 27 three-point shots. Anthony Edwards and Donte DiVincenzo each scored a team-high 28 points on a combined 10 of 21 shooting from distance. The Warriors won the last three games of the four-game season series getting a payout in each one. Failing to cover the NBA spread at home is nothing new for the Wolves this season. The setback gave them the worst home cover percentage (21.1) in the NBA.With the middle of the Western Conference standings so congested as we approach the midway point of the NBA season, the matchup between the Golden State Warriors and Minnesota Timberwolves is suddenly quite a big deal. The teams enter the week in a play-in spot but could go either direction in the standings depending on how they play. And for the Warriors it hasn’t been good. After winning 12 of their first 15 games they have just seven victories in their next 23 outings. The Warriors finish off a four-game road trip that saw them split the first two games ahead of Monday’s encounter with Toronto. The Wolves are 10-8 at home but they’ve been a money pit against NBA odds boasting a league-worst 4-13-1 record against the NBA betting line in their gym that included a 10-point loss to the Warriors as a 4-point favorite last month.

I didn’t think the Warriors were as good as the start to the season they had. Going 12-3 over the first month was unexpected. They were 10-5 ATS in that span while cashing the OVER in nine games. The Dubs fell fast and hard, though, dropping five in a row and nine of 11 games after that torrid start. It’s hard to figure them out and I certainly don’t think they’re as bad as they’ve played during their current run.
They are not the team that rattled off a bunch of NBA titles just a few years ago. Klay Thompson left during the offseason and Stephen Curry, while still brilliant, has seen his game decline. Steve Kerr has tried to make things work using his entire roster. A total of 12 players average more than 15 minutes of run time with no one averaging more than 32 minutes. Included in that group is Dennis Schroeder, who was acquired in a trade last month. The constant roster shuffling has affected continuity on the court and as a result the offense has suffered. Five times in their last nine games they failed to reach 100 points and they rank in the bottom third of the NBA in field goal percentage.
With their 108-96 loss to Indiana on Friday the Warriors cashed the UNDER in a third straight game and their 66.7 UNDER percentage is the second-best in the NBA. Curry is still an elite scorer averaging 22.6 points but they lack reliable secondary production. Schroeder was expeted to fill that role, but he’s averaging less than 10 points in more than 28 minutes in 13 games since joining the squad.
Minnesota Timberwolves
A run to last season’s Western Conference Finals was expected to set the Wolves up for long-term success. Blowing the team up by trading Karl-Anthony Towns didn’t help and the team has been wildly inconsistent. Saturday’s loss to Memphis ended a three-game winning streak that followed a three-game losing streak. Before that they won three in a row and before that they dropped three straight. You get the idea.
They’ve been strong defensively holding opponents to 107.7 points and 34.3 percent from three-point range, both among the top 5 in the NBA. However, in their last two games against the Warriors they allowed 113 and 114 points and lost them both. The Wolves won the first meeting, 107-90 and the teams played below the total in two of the three contests.
Both teams are strong defensively and like backing the UNDER since six of the last nine encounters finished below the total. And while the Warriors can bust out anytime with Curry dropping triples, the Wolves have more firepower and can negate anything inside with the presence of Rudy Gobert and Julius Randle. The Wolves will be laying a few points on the NBA betting line but I like them to cover with the game going UNDER the total.
