FanDuel Dominating in Virginia
October 5, 2023Week 5 NFL Parlay Best Bets
October 6, 2023After coming close to hitting a NFL teaser in Week 3 it finally happened last week with my three-bet ticket paying off at BetRivers sportsbook. Winning teasers are easier due to moving the NFL betting line in your favor. However, doing that comes at a cost. With a smaller payout on a winning ticket you need to win more NFL teasers to turn a profit. And sportsbooks aren’t in the business of handing out money. Last week we mentioned few teaser best practices and one of them paid off in a win in Philadelphia’s victory. Teasing the line from Philly -8 to -2 proved to be a bold move since the Eagles prevailed 34-31, doing exactly what a teaser is supposed to.
It turns out I didn’t need to tease the line on my other picks. I backed the Ravens at +9 on the teased line and they beat the Browns outright 28-3. And to make sure my NFL wager on the OVER in the Chicago Bears contest with Denver paid out, I teased the total to 40.5. Well, the strategy was sound but the move not needed since the clubs combined for 59 points. Let’s have a look at some NFL matchups see if we can continue our heater in the Week 5 NFL teaser best bets.
NFL Week 5 Teaser Best Bets
Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Buffalo Bills
Opening Line: Bills -6
Teaser Line: PK
I don’t think there’s a hotter team in the NFL right now than the Buffalo Bills. Sure, there are teams with better records, but following their opening-night loss to the Jets in which Josh Allen turned the ball over four times, the Bills have outscored opponents 123-33 during a three-game winning streak. This is a unique situation in that Jacksonville has been in London since last week playing its second straight game in the UK. And the Jags are coming off a win over Atlanta last week that ended a two-game losing streak.
Teasing the line to make this game a tossup seems to favor the Bills. Don’t be too quick to judge, though. The Jags have won two of the last three meetings holding Buffalo to a total of 30 points in those three games. When Buffalo gets on a roll, though, they’re tough to stop which is why they’re my NFL betting pick on the teased line.
Carolina Panthers at Detroit Lions
Opening Line: Lions -10
Teaser Line: Lions -4
Being a 10-point NFL favorite this week is a sign that the Detroit Lions have arrived. It’s the first time since the 2017 season that they’ve been laying double-digits. Not to get lost in the euphoria of their betting bonanza, I’m going to back the Lions but tease the NFL betting line to Detroit -4. Yeah, sorry guys, I haven’t completely bought in since the defense still has some holes and Jared Goff is, well, Jared Goff.
I questioned the move when the Panthers made it and I’m still not totally on board with Frank Reich. It’s too early to call Bryce Young a bust but the No. 1 overall draft pick needs to up his game. And Carolina’s defense is a work in progress that should give the Bills ample opportunity to cover. The Panthers should be motivated now that they’re the only winless team following Chicago’s victory over Washington on Monday night.
Dallas Cowboys at San Francisco 49ers
Opening Total: 45
Teaser Line: 51
I probably would have bet the UNDER in this game at the original total but teasing it up to 51 is a convincing argument. After four weeks of betting on NFL games we have a good idea of what teams look like. For the Niners it’s Super Bowl or bust and they’re playing like it. They’ve scored at least 30 points in every game boasting an offense and defense that both rank among the top 3 in the NFL. They haven’t faced a defense the caliber of Dallas Cowboys yet and the last two games between the teams were low-scoring affairs.
Those two were playoff matchups and there’s always a little more intensity during the postseason. With the clubs expected to get their again we could see that kind of intensity between clubs trying to send a message. That and two good defenses will do enough to keep the score below the total.
