It wasn’t a clean sweep but it was another profitable Week on my totals best bets at BetRivers sportsbook hitting two of three picks for the third consecutive week. Unlike a parlay and teaser, these bets are separate on the card so I don’t have to worry about a losing ticket if one bet doesn’t hit. It would be nice to hit all three picks on the over/under to put some distance between wins and losses on the season results. It’s time to scour the NFL betting line for Week 5 to see where the value lies on the totals.
There was some suspense last week with a pair of wins on Sunday followed by a slip up on the Monday Night Football game. The highest scoring team entering Week 4 didn’t have a big game but the second-highest scoring team did. In a battle for AFC East bragging rights, the Buffalo Bills continued their solid run beating Miami 48-20 to go OVER the total of 53.5. Backing UNDER the total of 43 in the Atlanta/Jacksonville game also proved a wise decision. The Falcons are going to have a hard time winning with Desmond Ridder and their offense sputtered in the 23-7 loss. Eagerly awaiting the MNF contest to see if the Giants could score a few points and get me a sweep for the week, instead it was another sad effort with Daniel Jones tossing a pick-six and getting sacked 10 times and the Giants failing to reach the end zone in a 24-3 setback.
NFL Week 5 Totals Best Bets
Houston Texans at Atlanta Falcons
Pick: OVER 41
C.J. Stroud looks like the steal of the draft putting together a solid start to the season with the Houston Texans suddenly exploding on offense. Stroud passed for 306 yards and two touchdowns in Houston’s 30-6 win over Pittsburgh. He has yet to throw an interception going a NFL rookie record 151 pass attempts at the start of the season without a pick. Stroud has 1,212 pass yards and six TDs this season with the club looking more comfortable in its offensive scheme. The Texans have also scored at least 30 points in each of the last two games and average 24.0 for the season.
The key to hitting the over is getting the Atlanta Falcons to score some points. I don’t think the Texans can score 41, but they’ll give it a shot. And the good news is that Houston’s defense isn’t the best, especially against the run. The Texans allowed 116.5 yards per game on the ground and will be tested by the duo of Bijan Robinson and Tyler Allgeier, who are needed for the offense to click. We should also see Ridder attempt to get Drake London and Kyle Pitts more involved in the passing game making the OVER a strong NFL wager.
New York Jets at Denver Broncos
Pick: UNDER 43.5
It’s difficult to trust the offense of either of these teams, which is why I’m backing the UNDER on the NFL betting line. The Denver Broncos did show signs of life in last week’s comeback win over the Bears, but facing a tougher defense in New York, I think Denver can get back to what made them winless in the first three weeks. Russell Wilson has looked good throwing the football, but the Jets made Josh Allen look foolish in the opener. With Zack Wilson running the show the Jets have put together one of the worst offenses in the NFL. It wasn’t supposed to be like this. With Aaron Rodgers in place the Jets were to fight for a playoff spot and Super Bowl. However, those plans were destroyed in the first game, and it looks like the offense took off with Rodgers. The Broncos gave up 70 a few weeks ago so there’s hope for New York’s offense.
Dallas Cowboys at San Francisco 49ers
Pick: UNDER 45
Why not add a little something to what’s sure to be an exciting matchup between two of the best teams in pro football. It seems like scoring 30 points is something the San Francisco 49ers just do automatically, having reached the number four times in as many games. I’m not sure they faced a strong defense in the group, which allowed Brock Purdy, Christian McCaffrey and others to shine. They face a formidable Dallas defense that’s surrendered a total of 41 points.
While its only Week 5 It’s safe to say these teams have lived up to their expectations. Making a NFL Wager on this matchup has to come against the UNDER on the NFL betting line with both defenses among the best in the NFL. And the last two meetings between the clubs were a lot like what I see on Sunday. The Niners won playoff meetings in each of the last two seasons playing below the closing total.
