February 6, 2024Super Bowl LVIII Quarterback Prop Picks
February 7, 2024It is Super Bowl week and that means the WM Phoenix Open will get the PGA Tour spotlight. Scottie Scheffler has made this event his personal playground recently, winning each of the last two years. He is favored once again to win this time around, but there are plenty of other contenders, including Justin Thomas. There are a number of top 20 players in the field this week, so it won’t be a walk in the park for Scheffler. I am coming off a 2-3 week with the matchups at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Let’s look at WM Phoenix Open matchup picks.

Defending Champion: Scottie Scheffler
Tournament Notes: Usually when you talk about the weather in Phoenix it is sunny and warm but that won’t be the case this week with a lot of clouds and some rain. The temperatures will actually be in the 50’s for this tournament. There could be some delays because of the weather and the first round may not be completed until Friday. Scheffler will be looking to become the first player since Steve Stricker from 2009-2011 to win a tournament in three straight years.

Golf Matchup Picks
Justin Thomas +170 vs. Scottie Scheffler
I don’t take many underdogs in golf matchups but the price on Thomas is simply ridiculous. Scheffler is one of my favorite players and I almost never go against him in a matchup, but I think this price is way too high. Hopefully I won’t regret going against him. I know Scheffler is the two-time defending champion, but I still don’t think he has figured out his putting issues and Thomas is playing really well. I think he has a real chance to win this event and I am taking him at the big plus price against Scheffler.
J.T. Poston -130 vs. Wyndham Clark
One of the things that has worked pretty well with the golf betting matchups each week is to go against the previous week’s winner. Clark had his great round and won at Pebble last week thanks to the event ending after 54 holes. I think he has a letdown this week. Poston has been playing really well and he has two top 25 finishes in this event.
Sungjae Im -125 vs. Tom Kim
You have to give Im a long look at TPC Scottsdale where he has two top 10 finishes. He has the right type of game to do well on this course and his temperament is perfect for big crowds. Perhaps it is time to go against Kim a little bit, as he hasn’t played nearly as well as he did a year ago.
Eric Cole +110 vs. Min Woo Lee
I think the hype on Min Woo Lee might be a bit much. While it is true that he may end up being a future PGA Tour star, he is not there yet. Cole continues to play well with three top 15 finishes this season. I don’t think he should be listed as an underdog in this matchup, so I will take him at plus money.
Brian Harman -110 vs. Shane Lowry
I am a little surprised that the price on this matchup is a pick. Harman has had more recent success than Lowry and there is no question that Harman should be the better putter on the Las Vegas Country Club greens. I’ll take Harman in this matchup.
