The Heisman Trophy has gone to a Power Five quarterback nine of the last 11 seasons. The other two went to a wide receiver in 2020 (Devonta Smith) and a running back in 2015 (Derrick Henry). If you felt the need to take a flier on any other position than quarterback, I’d got the way of the wide receiver.
The last two running backs to win the award came from Alabama. While Jahmyr Gibbs has been sensational to start the year, I don’t foresee him getting more votes than Young should Alabama find its way back to the CFP. As such, I only have eyes for a quarterback to bet on the Heisman Trophy futures odds listed at PointsBet Sportsbook.
It’s highly likely none of these players have a shot to prevent either C.J. Stroud or Bryce Young from winning the award due to the high caliber of their respective teams. Regardless, here are my favorite, underdog, and longshot selections to invest on early in the season.

Favorite to Bet: Caleb Williams +320
Williams made waves in the offseason by bolting Oklahoma and following Lincoln Riley to Southern California. The decision to do so looks to be the right call through the first two weeks. Williams has been the lynchpin for the Trojans getting out to a commanding 2-0 start by way of smashing Rice in the opener and following it up with another impressive offensive showing at Stanford.
In throwing for 590 yards and 6 TD while adding another 72 scoreless yards with his legs, Williams has seen his odds of winning the Heisman shorten up quite a bit.
When I last reported on the Heisman Trophy odds, Caleb Williams clocked in at 12-1. Congrats if you got a piece at that offering! The Trojans QB1 now possesses the second shortest odds on the PointsBet betting board with his rate of return clocking in at +320. Only C.J. Stroud’s pay-off is shorter!
Expected to be decided favorites in their next four games with three taking place at home versus Fresno State, Arizona State, and Washington State, now might be the best time to lock in an investment on Williams so as to not let any more line value evade your bankroll.
Underdog to Bet: J.J. McCarthy +3300
The changing of the guard has officially gone down in Ann Arbor. While Cade McNamara ultimately led Michigan to its first College Football Playoff invite a season ago, Jim Harbaugh cut the cord last week by handing over the starting reins to J.J. McCarthy after dazzling in a cushy matchup with Hawaii.
He took over the QB1 gig by completing 11 of 12 passes for 229 yards and 3 TD en route to helping lead the maize and blue to the decided 56-10 win. Though the Wolverines failed to cover the biggest spread in program history, the effort solidified the offense at the QB position moving forward.
Unfortunately, we’re not getting the best of the number with McCarthy’s odds of winning the award clocking in as high as 60-1 before he went on to dissect the Rainbow Warriors. Even so, 33-1 is a fantastic rate of return to have on a QB from a Power Five program that will have a shot of winning the Big 10 and secure yet another ticket to the CFP.
Don’t let any more line value escape you with games lined up against UConn, Maryland, @Iowa, and @Indiana lined up over the next four weeks.
Longshot to Bet: Will Rogers +6000
The longshot was between Mississippi State’s QB1 and Kentucky’s Will Levis. While the Wildcats are the ones getting the pub right now for going into the Swamp and defeating Florida, I ultimately think Hail State gets the last laugh with it destined to upset one of the big boys at some point this season.
I’ve really liked what I’ve seen from Mike Leach’s squad thus far in dominating Memphis the opening week and following it up with an impressive showing in a late-night kick on the west coast in a true letdown spot against Arizona.
In the process, Rogers has thrown for 763 yards and a 9:2 TD/INT ratio to lead Mississippi State to the No. 5 ranked passing attack in the country. Don’t sleep on this team or its QB1!
