The Tennessee Titans came from out of nowhere to win the AFC and enter the playoffs as the No. 1 seed a season ago. Though the Titz ultimately did nothing in the second season getting bounced by Cincinnati in the division round, the excellent regular season showing allowed for Mike Vrabel to take home the Coach of the Year Award.
I don’t foresee the former New England Patriot coaching his team to another successful season and his odds of repeating as the award winner signify as such.
The betting market is bullish on the Chargers Brandon Staley and the Dolphins Mike McDaniel who enter Week 2 as co-favorites to take home the award at BetRivers Sportsbook. While I give each an excellent shot of securing bragging rights since I’m bullish on both teams putting forth excellent regular season campaigns, I’m never one to invest in the chalk. With that, here are the favorite, underdog, and longshot options I’ve added to my portfolio instead.

Favorite to Bet: Kevin O’Connell +1000
If you followed my off-season stuff, you know I’m extremely bullish on the Minnesota Vikings. It felt like stealing when I hit the over of their 9-game season wins total, and I’ve already recouped that investment by slamming Minny in its home opener against the Green Bay Packers.
The prior coaching staff got in the way of this offense humming along like it should’ve. The talent up and down the offensive roster is some of the best in the league.
Think Justin Jefferson appreciates O’Connell’s offensive philosophy after going off for 184 yards and 2 TD on just nine receptions? That was a rhetorical question – the answer is unequivocally yes!
O’Connell saw his odds to win this award get slashed in half over the last few weeks, and I don’t think they’re getting longer anytime soon. You want as many pieces of the Vikings this season be it on a weekly basis or on the futures odds. If Minnesota goes on to win the NFC North, they’re only paying out at +120 right now. Why not maximize the return on investment and back the coach calling the shots just in case the Vikings destroy expectations and become that surprise team much like the Titans of a year ago?
Underdog to Bet: Sean McDermott +2000
I have no idea why McDermott’s odds to win the Coach of the Year Award have been slashed in half since first hitting the board as the odds-on favorite. The Bills were nothing if not uber impressive in that season opener in LA where it toyed with the reigning Super Bowl champs to get out to a 1-0 start.
This could really be a special season for the franchise. Should the Bills go on to destroy their 11-12 game season wins total, win the AFC East for the third straight year, and see Josh Allen win the MVP Award, it will be darn near close to impossible for McDermott to not be afforded some accolades.
While the odds are heavily stacked against McDermott from winning this award due to the heavy expectations placed upon the team he overlooks, I’m of the belief a 20-1 return on investment is worth the squeeze should the Bills go on to check all the boxes.
Longshot to Bet: Arthur Smith +5000
Now this one would take some major work to come in, but that’s why it’s a long shot. Of the coaches in the bottom of the barrel, I came away most impressed with how the Falcons looked the opening week of the season.
The offense was explosive in doing damage against what’s expected to be one of the better overall defenses in the league. Though Atlanta ultimately went on to spit the bit against the Saints, I’m hoping the loss serves as a springboard for success down the road.
The Falcons are a much better team than I expected when breaking the roster down in the offseason. Marcus Mariota looks confident running the offense.
Cordarrelle Patterson still has plenty of gas in the tank. Kyle Pitts is a freak soon to be unleashed, and the defense sports one of the better secondaries in the league with Casey Hayward joining forces with A.J. Terrell.
The pieces are there for Atlanta to be the surprise team in the NFC. Should that come to fruition, Arthur Smith is going to give us a shot at cashing in on a big dog to win the Coach of the Year Award.
