Offensive Rookie of the Year Odds Update

We’re a week into the 2022-23 NFL betting season and already NFL bettors have seen some dramatic line movement atop the pecking order. Last week, I offered up my favorite, underdog, and longshot selections to take home the hardware. They included Treylon Burks, Kenneth Walker III, and Jameson Williams who offered up +1300, +2500, and +8000 returns on investment respectively at PointsBet Sportsbook.

Two of the three are yet to suit up for their rookie campaigns, but the former had a pretty decent debut. Nowhere near as good as Drake London who is now the odds-on favorite, but good enough to see his stock price get driven up at Prediction Strike. This week’s piece won’t offer up anymore selections. Instead, I’m going to breakdown what went down instead and correlate to the line movement.

The Atlanta Falcons No. 1 draft pick shot up to the top of the leaderboard by way of hauling in five of seven targets and turning them into 74 scoreless yards. Does the former USC Trojan have the chops to have a wide receiver take home the hardware a second year in a row for only the second time in the history of the award? With Marcus Mariota and or Desmond Ridder likely to be his quarterback the rest of the way, I won’t be betting on it. Still, it was a noticeable jump for Drake London who is now the +750 favorite after clocking in at 12-1 going into Sunday’s matchup with the Saints.

Same goes for Washington’s Jahan Dotson who catapulted up the ranks as well by way of two of his three receptions going for touchdowns. Now if the former Penn State Nittany Lion can pull that off each and every week, just hand the award over to him right now. With so many other mouths to feed in what looks to be a pretty darn good receiving cast, two touchdown days are likely to be few and far between; Week 1 was certainly the outlier. Regardless, Dotson’s odds of winning the OROY jumped from 20-1 to 8-1.

Chris Olave remains third in the pecking order with his odds of winning the award sticking at 10-1. While he went on to snare all three of his targets, they were only turned into 41 total yards. As such, it comes off as a bit surprising that his odds to win the trophy remain unchanged. It’s possible linemakers are giving him the benefit of the doubt with the Atlanta Falcons defense actually possessing a pretty darn good secondary. Another stiff challenge waits in Week 2 with the Bucs invading the bayou. Another vanilla stat line and his odds will certainly swell.

The frontrunners from last week – Kenny Pickett and George Pickens – fell down to fourth and fifth of the pecking order. Each currently offers up a 12-1 return after clocking in at +700 and +800 respectively a week ago. Pickett is yet to get any “PT” but Pickens got some reps in and did very little with them. He was targeted three times and only hauled in a single pass for three yards which already saw him get dropped in my home fantasy league. I don’t think either of these guys becomes a factor in this race until the QB1 reins are handed over to Pickett with each making sweet music with one another in the preseason.

Another player getting the benefit of the doubt from linemakers was Dameon Pierce who remains at 12-1. For one reason or another, the Texans chose to ride Rex Burkhead in the season opener versus Indianapolis to the chagrin of Pierce’s fantasy and prop backers after Lovie Smith did nothing but tout him throughout training camp and the preseason. It proved to be nothing but hot noise with the former Florida Gator getting 11 carries and only being targeted once out of the backfield. The 34 total scrimmage yards somehow saw his odds stick at 12-1.

Headscratcher alert – Though Brian Robinson Jr. didn’t take a single snap in the opener versus Jacksonville, his odds to win the Offensive Rookie of the year Award still shortened up dramatically. This kid was supposedly going to usurp a ton of work from Antonio Gibson once the regular season kicked off. Then he went out and got shot. Thinking he’d be out of commission for at least the first month, his odds skyrocketed to +5000. Recent updates now have his return to the huddle being much sooner. Because of it, his odds chime in at 12-1. Considering Gibson beasted in the opener, I don’t get it. Robinson is nothing more than the backup folks!

Another player whose odds shorten up in a big way was Kansas City running back Isiah Pacheco. His odds jumped from +3300 to +1800 by way of leading the rushing attack with 62 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries. That being said, the tuddy came in mop-up duty midway through the fourth quarter with the game well in hand for the Chiefs. In a much more competitive game with the Chargers, the former Rutgers alum only got two carries that were turned into six scoreless yards. He’s third on the totem pole right now behind CEH and Jerick McKinnon – hard fade!

As for last week’s picks, Burks stuck at +1300, Walker moved up to +3000, and Williams for one reason or another shrunk to +6600. I still think there’s value with all three at those offerings.
